Article Synopsis
  • Red blood cell antigens are diverse in structure and function, with 43 recognized blood group systems and 9 clinically significant ones linked to transfusion reactions and neonatal diseases.
  • This study focused on analyzing minor blood group antigens among 260 voluntary blood donors in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, using an automated immunohematology analyzer.
  • The results revealed specific frequencies and phenotypes of minor blood antigens, emphasizing their importance for managing alloimmunization in transfused patients.

Background: Immunohematological abnormalities among human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients are common abnormalities associated with severe depletion of the immune system, covering a stage of acute syndrome to an advanced disease. The greatest impact was observed in the low- and middle-income countries. However, in Ethiopia, little attention has been paid, and only limited published information exists regarding immunohematological abnormalities among individuals receiving highly active antiretroviral treatment.

Background: The discovery of the ABO blood group system and testing of blood donors highly reduced the fatalities associated with blood transfusion reactions and improved the safety of blood transfusion. Blood group antigens are found on the surface of red blood cells that are inherited biological characteristics that do not change throughout life in healthy individuals.

Objective: To determine the prevalence ABO and Rh blood groups Among Volunteer Blood Donors at Ethiopian blood and tissue bank service (EBTBS), Addis Ababa.

Background: Reference interval (RI) for hematological parameters is used to interpret laboratory test results in the diagnosis, management and monitoring of hematologic disorders. Several factors including sex, age, dietary patterns, pregnancy status, ethnicity and geographic location affect hematological RIs. However, manufacturers derived reference value is currently in use in most developing countries including Ethiopia.
