Article Synopsis
  • Mitochondrial diseases (MITO) are rare genetic disorders affecting high-energy organ systems, often managed through dietary supplements and specific diets.
  • A survey conducted from March to September 2021 showed that MITO patients averaged 7 supplements, with over 70% taking more than 4, and 60% following dietary restrictions, but most faced stress due to supplement costs and inadequate financial coverage.
  • There is insufficient scientific evidence supporting the use of dietary supplements in MITO patients, leading to excessive use and stress; future research is necessary for informed, evidence-based recommendations.

In phase 1, we surveyed an advisory panel of North American experts to select pathogens requiring diagnostic test guidance definition development.
