Article Synopsis
  • Metabolic/neurodegenerative encephalopathies cover various conditions in dogs and cats that have similar MRI features, complicating accurate diagnosis and often requiring multiple tests.
  • This study aimed to analyze MRI characteristics, classify conditions based on gray and white matter involvement, and compare findings with existing literature, involving 100 cases (81 dogs and 19 cats).
  • Notable findings included unusual MRI patterns, such as cerebellar nuclei changes in hepatic encephalopathy and specific white matter involvement in myelinolysis, along with unique effects of thiamine deficiency on various brain structures.

In humans, intracranial hematomas commonly exhibit a T2 blackout effect (BOE) with diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) maps. Published descriptions of comparable findings in dogs with intracerebral hemorrhages are lacking. Aims of this retrospective observational study were to describe the appearance of presumed intracerebral hemorrhages (PICHs) in DWI regardless of the underlying etiology and presence of T2 blackout effect (T2 BOE) in dogs and to test potential associations with DWI and ADC findings versus the estimated age of the hemorrhage.

Article Synopsis
  • Pericardial effusions in dogs are commonly noted, but their link to rodenticide poisoning is not well documented.
  • A mixed-breed dog showed signs of illness, including anorexia and cough, with diagnostic imaging revealing significant heart enlargement and fluid accumulation around the heart.
  • Treatment with vitamin K led to a complete recovery, marking the first documented case of severe pericardial issues related to anticoagulant exposure in dogs.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on an 8-month-old German shepherd dog with a rare condition called peritoneopericardial diaphragmatic hernia (PPDH) that resulted in right-sided heart failure and was linked to a pericardial pseudocyst and severe fluid accumulation around the heart.
  • Diagnostic imaging techniques, including echocardiography and CT scans, revealed significant health issues including the presence of a cyst-like structure and complications from a prior umbilical hernia surgery.
  • Surgical intervention successfully corrected the PPDH and removed the pseudocyst, which was identified as undergoing chronic inflammation with no signs of a protective lining, suggesting it may have stemmed from inflammation related to previous surgical repair, although an infection was

In veterinary medicine, patients undergo magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) under general anesthesia to enable acquisition of artifact-free images. The fraction of inspired oxygen (FiO) ranges between 30 and 95%. In humans, a high FiO is associated with incomplete signal suppression of peripheral cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) spaces on T2-weighted fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (T2w-FLAIR) sequences.
