Internal maxillary artery (IMax) - middle cerebral artery bypass in a patient with bilateral atherosclerotic carotid occlusion: A technical case report.

Since the first description of the possible utilization of the internal maxillary artery for bypass surgery, there are some reports of its use in aneurysm cases; however, there is no information about the possible advantages of this type of bypass for cerebral ischemic disease. We present a 77-year-old man with a history of diabetes, hypertension, systemic atherosclerosis, and two acute myocardial infarctions with left hemiparesis. Imaging studies reported total occlusion of the right internal carotid artery and 75% occlusion on the left side, with an old opercular infarction and repeated transient ischemic attacks in the right middle cerebral artery territory despite medical treatment.

Time of day effects on railroad roadway worker injury risk.

Introduction: The purpose of this study is to examine how time of day affects injury risk of railroad maintenance of way employees and signalmen (roadway workers). Railroads reported 15,654 serious roadway worker injuries between 1997 and 2014. Roadway workers primarily work outdoors on or near railroad tracks and frequently encounter hazardous conditions.

Traumatic experiences and re-victimization of female inmates undergoing treatment for substance abuse.

Background: In the past decade, several studies have focused on the treatment needs of female inmates with substance abuse problems. An important finding has been that these women are more likely to report histories of sexual, physical, and emotional abuse-at rates varying from 77% to 90%. The trauma resulting from this kind of abuse is a key contributing factor in behavioral problems in adolescence and subsequent delinquency, substance abuse, and criminality in adulthood.

Analysis of oxidative stress enzymes and structural and functional proteins on human aortic tissue from different aortopathies.

The role of oxidative stress in different aortopathies is evaluated. Thirty-two tissue samples from 18 men and 14 women were divided into: 4 control (C) subjects, 11 patients with systemic arterial hypertension (SAH), 4 with variants of Marfan's syndrome (MV), 9 with Marfan's syndrome (M), 2 with Turner's syndrome, and 2 with Takayasu's arteritis (TA). Embedding quantum simulators for quantum computation of entanglement.

We introduce the concept of embedding quantum simulators, a paradigm allowing the efficient quantum computation of a class of bipartite and multipartite entanglement monotones. It consists in the suitable encoding of a simulated quantum dynamics in the enlarged Hilbert space of an embedding quantum simulator. In this manner, entanglement monotones are conveniently mapped onto physical observables, overcoming the necessity of full tomography and reducing drastically the experimental requirements.

Family members' perceptions of inpatient palliative care consult services: a qualitative study.

Background: Family members are commonly involved in end-of-life decision making and typically involved in inpatient palliative care consultations. Although much research has documented patient outcomes following inpatient palliative care consultation, little is known about family member perceptions of the consultation.

Aim: The purpose of this study was to determine how inpatient palliative care consultations impacted family members' understanding of the patient's condition, knowledge of available care options, and decision-making ability.

Court-mandated outpatient psychiatric care for a pregnant woman with psychosis: a unique bridge to alliance.

We describe the case of a young pregnant woman with refractory schizoaffective disorder and how we reached a decision to apply for court-mandated outpatient psychiatric treatment (Assisted Outpatient Treatment or AOT). The patient was stable when we made this application as a preventive measure, given her serious prior episodes of illness. While there has been court-mandated outpatient obstetrical treatment, as far as we know this is the first report of mandated outpatient psychiatric treatment in connection with pregnancy.

A novel subtype of patients with mutations in the phenylalanine hydroxylase (PAH) gene that show a positive response during a tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4) loading test has recently been recognized. These studies suggest that a number of phenylketonuric (PKU) patients may benefit from BH4 substitution, eliminating the need of life-long dietary restrictions. In our unit, we performed BH4 overload tests in 50 PAH-deficient patients.

Objectives: To determine the effect of adherence on the rate of protease inhibitor (PI) treatment failure among human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients.

Methods: A prospective study of a cohort of 282 patients who initiated PI therapy from March 1996 to December 1997. Adherence was quantified as the percentage of prescribed doses reportedly taken and treatment failure was defined as HIV RNA levels above 200 copies/ml after 1 year on therapy.

MHC class I genes in a New World primate, the cotton-top tamarin (Saguinus oedipus), have evolved by an active process of loci turnover.

Lymphocytes of a New World primate, the cotton-top tamarin (Saguinus oedipus), express classical G-related major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I molecules with unusually limited polymorphism and variability. Three G-related loci, an F locus, an E locus, and two pseudogenes (So-N1 and So-N3) have been identified by cDNA library screening and extensive PCR analysis of both cDNA and genomic DNA from the cotton-top tamarin. Furthermore, each genus of the subfamily Callitrichinae (tamarins and marmosets) appears to express its own unique set of MHC class I genes, likely due to a rapid turnover of loci.

[Infective endocarditis associated with pregnancy].

Methods: Eleven patients, between 1984-1992 according to the beginning of the IE episode (fever and other signals) were studied. Patients were divided in two groups: IE of pregnancy (7 cases), and puerperal IE (4 cases).
