Petroleum contamination in soil exerts toxic effects on earthworms () through non-polar narcotic mechanisms. However, the specific toxicities of individual petroleum components remain insufficiently understood. This study investigates the effects of four petroleum components-saturated hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons, resins, and asphaltenes-on earthworms in artificially contaminated soil, utilizing a combination of biochemical biomarker analysis and metabolomics to uncover the underlying molecular mechanisms.

Article Synopsis
  • PFAS are commonly found in paddy soils and their movement between water and soil is influenced by the soil's microbial communities.
  • The study combined soil metabolomics with microbial sequencing and found that the metabolic activity of both bacteria and fungi significantly impacts PFAS transfer, with fungi playing a more crucial role.
  • Specific amino acids like Tyrosine and Tryptophan were identified as key contributors to PFAS distribution, highlighting the need to understand microbial metabolites' roles in managing PFAS pollution in agricultural areas.

Storage of shell eggs converts natural ovalbumin (N-OVA) into its more thermostable forms (S-OVA). This conversion may be associated with deterioration in the foaming properties of the stored shell egg. Thus, the foaming behavior of N-OVA and S-OVA, especially their performance at different pH conditions, was conducted.

Understanding the modulation of paddy field irrigation to the migration of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) at the water-soil interface is pivotal for the management of PFAS pollution in paddy soil and surrounding surface water environments. In flooded soils, soil organic matter was transformed into aromatic protein-like dissolved organic matter (DOM). Meanwhile, Na, K, and Mg were translocated into extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) under the catalysis of cation channel enzymes (p < 0.

Genus Rubia is widely distributed in almost all regions of the world, with 36 species and 2 varieties in China. Rubia species, such as Rubia cordifolia, have been used in traditional Chinese medicine for the treatment of diseases since ancient times. In recent years, the study of anticancer effects in traditional Chinese medicine has become a popular topic, and some studies have shown that several Rubia species extracts have cytotoxic and antitumor effects, and some of them have been shown to contain specific antitumor agents.

Stereoconvergent reactions enable the transformation of mixed stereoisomers into well-defined, chiral products─a crucial strategy for handling /-mixed olefins, which are common but challenging substrates in organic synthesis. Herein, we report a stereoconvergent and highly enantioselective method for synthesizing -homoallylic alcohols via the nickel-catalyzed reductive coupling of /-mixed 1,3-dienes with aldehydes. This process is enabled by an -heterocyclic carbene ligand characterized by -symmetric backbone chirality and bulky 2,6-diisopropyl -aryl substituents.

Numerous studies have indicated that organic fertilizers (OFer) might contain heavy metals (HMs) that present health risks to organic farmers (OFar). This study compared the concentrations of six HMs (Zn, Ni, Cd, Cu, Pb, Cr) in the blood of two distinct groups of farmers: 30 OFar from a designated organic area in eastern Taiwan, and 74 conventional farmers (CFar) from neighboring non-organic designated regions. The findings revealed that the OFar exhibited higher levels of Zn (1202.

Article Synopsis
  • Two advanced chromatography and mass spectrometry systems were developed to analyze metabolites from three different species using two methods: one online and one offline 2D-LC.
  • The first dimension effectively separated acidic triterpenoids from weakly acidic flavonoids, allowing for precise subsample analysis.
  • A total of 1,097 compounds were identified, with each method showcasing unique strengths in identifying various subclasses of metabolites.

Characterization and spatial distribution studies of the metabolome in plants are crucial for revealing the physiology of plants and developing functional foods. Using the rhizome of as a case, we integrated desorption electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry imaging (DESI-MSI) and high-resolution liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry approaches aimed at characterizing and locating both the small molecules and the macromolecular polysaccharides. Under the optimal conditions, 21 flavonoids and 12 triterpenoids were detected and characterized in different tissues of the rhizome and another 19 components were characterized exclusively by DESI-MSI.

Chronic heart failure (CHF) is the primary cause of death among patients with cardiovascular diseases, representing the advanced stage in the development of several cardiovascular conditions. Zhenwu decoction (ZWD) has gained widespread recognition as an efficacious remedy for CHF due to its potent therapeutic properties and absence of adverse effects. Nevertheless, the precise molecular mechanisms underlying its actions remain elusive.

Nitrification, a key step in soil nitrogen cycling, is a biologically mediated process crucial to the ecological environment. However, how nitrifiers drive nitrification under different soil properties and climatic factors at large spatial scales is poorly understood. Here, using metagenomic sequencing and network-based approaches, we identified key nitrifying species of upland agricultural soils in northern China, which spans a wide range of climates and geographic distances.

The two most prevalent subtypes of epithelial ovarian carcinoma (EOC) are ovarian clear cell carcinoma (OCCC) and high-grade serous ovarian carcinoma (HGSC). Patients with OCCC have a poor prognosis than those with HGSC due to chemoresistance, implying the need for novel treatment target. In this study, we applied single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) together with bulk RNA-seq data from the GEO (Gene Expression Omnibus) database (the GSE189553 dataset) to characterize and compare tumor heterogeneity and cell-level evolution between OCCC and HGSC samples.

  • The study aimed to compare two treatment methods, antibiotic-impregnated bone cement surface technique (BCS-T) and vacuum sealing drainage (VSD), for patients with tibial fractures complicated by infection and soft tissue defects.
  • It was a retrospective analysis involving 31 patients, where key outcomes such as wound healing and cost of treatment were evaluated over an 18.9-month median follow-up period.
  • Results showed no significant differences in healing times or functional outcomes between the two techniques, but BCS-T had a markedly lower cost for covering materials.
