Biochar and ryegrass have been used in the remediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)-contaminated soils; however, the effects of different biochar application levels on the dissipation of PAHs, bacterial communities, and PAH-ring hydroxylating dioxygenase (PAH-RHDα) genes in rhizosphere soil remain unclear. In this study, enzyme activity tests, real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and high-throughput sequencing were performed to investigate the effects of different proportions of rape straw biochar (1%, 2%, and 4% (w/w)) on the degradation of PAHs, as well as the associated changes in the soil bacterial community and PAH-RHDα gene expression. The results revealed that biochar enhanced the rhizoremediation of PAH-contaminated soil and that 2% biochar-treated rhizosphere soil was the most effective in removing PAHs.

Termitomyces fungi associated with fungus-growing termites are the edible mushrooms and can produce useful chemicals, enzymes, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that have both fuel and biological potentials. To this purpose, we examined the Termitomyces mycelial growth performance on various substrates, clarified lignocellulose-degrading enzyme activity, and also identified the VOCs produced by Termitomyces. Our results indicated that the optimal nutrition and condition requirements for mycelial growth are D-sorbitol, D-(+)-glucose, and D-(-)-fructose as carbon sources; peptone as well as yeast extract and ammonium tartrate as nitrogen sources; and Mn, Na, and Mg as metal ions with pH range from 7.

A three-dimensional (3D) electrode material was successfully synthesized through a facile ZnO-assisted hydrothermal process in which vertical MnO nanotube arrays were in situ grown on the conductive graphene/polyester composite fabric. The morphology and structure of MnO nanotubes/graphene/polyester textile electrode were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).
