Introduction: Neurological manifestations of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) have been reported as cranial neuropathies or meningeal symptoms most common in children. However, ALL can rarely involve the nerve roots causing symmetrical polyradiculopathy which can present with rapid onset paralysis, mimicking Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS). The symmetrical polyradiculopathy can be the earliest manifestation of ALL occurring even before the hematological and systemic manifestations.

Associations Among Physical Activity Level and Skeletal Muscle Antioxidants in Older Adults.

Methods: The authors determined if habitual physical activity (PA) and cardiorespiratory fitness were associated with skeletal muscle expression of endogenous antioxidants (superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase) and circulating oxidative stress markers (serum 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine [8-OHdG]; oxidized low-density lipoprotein [LDL]) in older adults. Employment and coronary risk in women at midlife: a longitudinal analysis.

This study investigated the relation between employment and cholesterol in 541 women aged 42-50 years who resided in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, in 1985-1988. Employment, health-related variables, and cholesterol were assessed at baseline and 3 years later. At baseline, employed and nonemployed women did not differ in cholesterol or health behaviors.

Alternative splicing of CD44 pre-mRNA in human colorectal tumors.

Expression of the CD44 molecule has been linked to tumor growth and metastases in both human and rodent cancers. Alternatively spliced variants expressed in rat and mouse tumors have been shown to confer metastatic potential to non-metastatic carcinoma cell lines, and human homologues of rat variant mRNA sequences are expressed in human tumors. In the present study matched sets of RNA from adenocarcinomas of the colon and distant normal mucosa were assayed for CD44 expression by quantitative RT-PCR.

Cytokines in inflammatory malignant fibrous histiocytoma presenting with leukemoid reaction.

Inflammatory malignant fibrous histiocytomas (IMFH) are rare tumors and are frequently associated with leukocytosis. In rare cases, leukemoid reactions were attributed to tumor production of unidentified hematopoietic factors. In this study, we used immunohistochemical techniques to show cytokine immunoreactivity in the malignant cells of two cases of IMFH presenting with leukemoid reactions and compared them with two malignant fibrous histocytomas, noninflammatory type.

c-Yes tyrosine kinase activity in human colon carcinoma.

To examine the role of Src-related proteins in human colon carcinoma we measured the tyrosine kinase activity of pp60c-src (Src), p62c-yes (Yes), p56lck (Lck), p59fyn (Fyn), p59hck (Hck), p56lyn (Lyn) and p55c-fgr (Fgr) from colonic cells. Yes activity, similar to that of Src, was 10-20 fold higher in three of five colon carcinoma cell lines and fivefold higher in 10 of 21 primary colon cancers than that in normal colonic cells. Lck activity was present in COLO 205 cells, otherwise Lck, Fyn, Hck, Lyn and Fgr activities were not detected in any of the carcinoma cell lines or cancers tested.

Expression of the gastrin gene in the normal human colon and colorectal adenocarcinoma.

Gastrin, produced in the G-cells of the gastric antrum and regulating acid secretion in the stomach, also acts as a trophic factor in the gastrointestinal tract. Because of its possible role in colon cell proliferation and differentiation, evidence for its presence in normal colorectal mucosa and adenocarcinoma was sought. Utilizing tumors and matched normal mucosa from 26 patients, mature gastrin and progastrin were studied by immunohistochemistry.

Distribution of cells expressing myc proteins in human colorectal epithelium, polyps, and malignant tumors.

The myc gene family encodes nuclear phosphoproteins that are thought to play a role in the control of cellular proliferation and differentiation. We have undertaken an immunohistochemical study assessing the expression of myc gene family proteins in individual cells of normal colonic mucosa, colorectal polyps, and colorectal adenocarcinomas. We screened a panel of mouse monoclonal antibodies that we raised against recombinant human c-myc and N-myc proteins for recognition of myc proteins in paraffin tissue sections.

We investigated the effects of elated and depressed affect on sexual arousal in 15 sexually functional males. Subjects received elation and depression mood inductions in a repeated-measures design. Immediately following each induction, subjects viewed a brief erotic film during which penile tumescence and subjective sexual arousal were recorded continuously.

Ribosomal protein genes are overexpressed in colorectal cancer: isolation of a cDNA clone encoding the human S3 ribosomal protein.

We have isolated a cDNA clone encoding the human S3 ribosomal protein from a normal human colon cDNA library. The clone was identified as one of many that detected genes whose level of expression was increased in adenocarcinoma of the colon relative to normal colonic mucosa. Increased levels of the S3 transcript were present in the tumors of all eight patients examined.

Psychiatric symptoms in mentally ill chemical abusers.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether mentally ill chemical abusers (MICA patients) report greater distress than do psychiatric patients who do not abuse psychoactive substances. Thirty-two MICA patients and 31 non-substance-abusing patients completed the SCL-90-R.
