Clinical Outcomes and Predictors of Poor Prognosis in Non-aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage: A 10-Year Cohort Analysis.

Introduction A large majority of spontaneous subarachnoid hemorrhages (SAH) are attributed to aneurysm rupture, though the cause remains unknown in a notable percentage of cases. Non-aneurysmal SAH (naSAH) is generally thought to follow a more benign clinical course than aneurysmal SAH (aSAH); however, similar complications may occur, and poor outcomes are still possible. Given the limited research on naSAH, this study aims to characterize these patients and correlate clinical and radiographic findings with outcomes.

Congenital adactyly and oligodactyly with metatarsal hypoplasia in two rhesus monkeys.

Congenital digital defects, particularly adactyly and oligodactyly, have been reported frequently in humans, however, their occurrence in rhesus monkeys is rare, mainly in the hind limbs. We present here for the first time, two female rhesus monkeys with unilateral congenital toe defects with metatarsal involvement. One showing adactyly and the other oligodactyly.

Malaria in indigenous and non-indigenous patients aged under 15 years between 2007-2018, Amazonas state, Brazil.

Background: Malaria is a serious problem in children because the immune system is less developed, thus, causing more severe symptoms. This study aimed to identify factors associated with malaria in indigenous and non-indigenous patients aged under 15 years in Amazonas, Brazil, from 2007 to 2018.

Methods: An epidemiological, quantitative, cross-sectional study was conducted.

Orofacial Deformities in 3 Related Rhesus Monkeys () Resembling Human Binder's Syndrome.

Binder's syndrome is a rare congenital deformity characterized by midface hypoplasia, particularly around the nasomaxillary area. Genetic etiology or developmental failure caused by prenatal exposure to teratological agents has been considered. In this article, we present 3 related rhesus monkeys born with orofacial deformities similar to those found in infants with the Binder phenotype.

Effect of active gelatin-starch film containing Syzygium cumini and Origanum vulgare extract on the preservation of lamb burgers.

The objective of the research was to control the oxidative stability of lamb burgers by applying gelatin-starch active film containing java plum (Syzygium cumini) and oregano (Origanum vulgare). The films were prepared from four formulations: without extract addition (FC), with the addition of java plum extract (FJ), with the addition of oregano extract (FO) and with the addition of java plum and oregano extract (FJO). Films were characterized in terms of the physical, barrier, mechanical and antioxidant properties.

Inhibition of Protein and Lipid Oxidation in Ready-to-Eat Chicken Patties by a L. Bagasse Phenolic-Rich Extract.

This study evaluated the impact of yellow mombin ( L.) bagasse extract (YMBE) on the color degradation, protein and lipid oxidation in ready-to-eat chicken patties during 15 days of refrigerated storage. Two formulations of chicken patties were developed: chicken patties control - PCON (without the antioxidant extract) and chicken patties with yellow mombin extract - PYME (with the antioxidant extract).

Congenital short tail in Macaca mulatta.

In a captive Macaca mulatta breeding colony, a single family group with 39 animals showed 19 individuals being born with dramatic tail shortening. Through clinical, genealogical, radiographic, and cytogenetic evaluation, it was related to a probable dominant autosomal inheritance of the reduction in the number of distal caudal vertebrae.

It is remarkable publications about malaria in the Amazon, although information on malaria in indigenous populations is still poorly explored.

The influence of adrenergic blockade in rats with apical periodontitis under chronic stress conditions.

Objective: To investigate the influence of chronic stress and adrenergic blockade in a rat model of apical periodontitis.

Methods: Thirty-two Wistar rats were submitted to an animal model of periapical lesion and randomly divided into 4 groups (n = 8): no stress (NS); stress + saline solution (SS); stress + β-adrenergic blocker (Sβ); stress + α-adrenergic blocker (Sα). The SS, Sβ and Sα groups were submitted to an animal model of chronic stress for 28 days and received daily injections of saline solution, propranolol (β adrenergic blocker) and phentolamine (α adrenergic blocker), respectively.

Palmoplantar depigmentation in Macaca fascicularis following Blaschko linear pattern.

Hypomelanosis of Ito is a rare neurocutaneous syndrome, characterized by streaks and swirls of hypopigmentation arranged in a Blaschkoid pattern. Other associated anomalies are observed. We report a case of a male cynomolgus monkey (Macaca fascicularis) who presented the characteristic of hypomelanosis of Ito with palmoplantar involvement and polythelia.

This work aimed to explore the cardiovascular effects induced by freeze-dried juice from Syzygium jambolanum (Lam.) DC fruits (JSJ). JSJ presented high polyphenol content and steroids.

Characterization of the cork formation and production transcriptome in × hybrids.

Cork oak is the main cork-producing species worldwide, and plays a significant economic, ecological and social role in the Mediterranean countries, in particular in Portugal and Spain. The ability to produce cork is limited to a few species, hence it must involve specific regulation mechanisms that are unique to these species. However, to date, these mechanisms remain largely understudied, especially with approaches involving the use of high-throughput sequencing technology.

Background: The taxonomic classification of squirrel monkeys is often controversial issue offering many different information. The classification of captive animals is difficult due to the phenotypic similarities between the presented species, which is observed mainly in coat coloration.

Methods: The objective of this study was to analyze the chromosome pattern of one squirrel monkey with off standard physical characteristics, which is kept in the Laboratory Animals Breeding Center in Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, and try to establish some correlations.

Bioaccessibility and antioxidant activity of phenolic compounds in frozen pulps of Brazilian exotic fruits exposed to simulated gastrointestinal conditions.

This study characterized the phenolic profile in siriguela, umbu-cajá and mangaba, as well in their frozen pulps (FPs). The bioaccessibility of phenolic compounds and the antioxidant activity of the FP dialysates were determined following exposure to simulated gastrointestinal conditions. The profile of phenolic compounds identified in fruit and FPs were relatively similar.

Antioxidant and vasorelaxant activities induced by northeastern Brazilian fermented grape skins.

Background: In northeastern Brazil, grape pomace has become a potential alternative byproduct because of the recover phenolic compounds from the vinification process. Comparative analyses were performed between lyophilized extract of grape skins from pomace, described as fermented (FGS), and fresh, unfermented (UGS) grape skins to show the relevant brand's composition upon the first maceration in winemaking.

Methods: The use of in vitro testing such as Folin-Ciocalteu's, DPPH free radical scavenger and HPLC methods were performed to evidence antioxidant effect and phenolic compounds.

Spontaneous telangiectatic osteosarcoma in a rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta).

Osteosarcoma (OS) is the most common type of bone cancer, especially in young. Telangiectatic osteosarcoma (TO) is a rare variant of OS, and hence, its occurrence, presentation, and prognosis are poorly understood. A 4-year-old female rhesus monkey presenting lameness and swelling was examined for a mass on the right humerus.

The efficacy of an edible chitosan coating (CHI; 4 mg/mL) and L. essential oil (OVEO; 1.25 μL/mL) for maintaining the quality of cherry tomato fruit during storage at room (25°C; 12 days) and cold (12°C; 24 days) temperatures was assessed.

Study of three non-syndromic cases of congenital thumb aplasia in captive rhesus monkeys.

Although congenital thumb absence has been reported frequently in humans, their occurrence in macaques is rare. We observed three cases of spontaneous thumb defects in captive female rhesus monkeys. One animal exhibited bilateral absence and two other presented unilateral thumb absence, all with metacarpal integrity.

Neotropical primate nursery in a squirrel monkey breeding unit in Brazil.

Saimiri (squirrel monkey) is a neotropical primate of the Simian genus that has been bred in captivity for the development of research into human and animal health. They have been widely used in studies in ophthalmology, toxicology, pharmacology, psychiatry, neuroscience, vaccines and drug tests (such as malaria and measles agents), as well as effects on interactive behavior and cognition of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in man. The main concern of non-human primate (NHP) research centers is focused on the establishment of self-sustaining breeding colonies providing good quality research animals.

Antinociceptive activity of (-)-(2S,6S)-(6-ethyl-tetrahydropyran-2-yl)-formic acid on acute pain in mice.

Pain is a major cause of distress, both physical and psychological. There is a continuous search for new pharmacologically active analgesic agents with minor adverse effects. Recently, the synthesis of (-)-(2S,6S)-(6-ethyl-tetrahydropyran-2-yl)-formic acid [tetrahydropyran derivative (TD)] was described.

Separation of acetins by counter-current chromatography.

In this work we report the purification of a crude acetin mixture into mono-, di- and triacetin by countercurrent chromatography. The process was initially tested on a small, semi-preparative scale (0.5 g) to determine its efficiency.
