The present study was designed to investigate the combined effects of cyclooxygenase (COX)-1 and COX-2 selective inhibitors on human ovarian SKOV-3 carcinoma cells xenograft-bearing mice. The animals were treated with 3 mg/kg SC-560 (a COX-1 selective inhibitor) alone, 25 mg/kg celecoxib (a COX-2 selective inhibitor) alone, or SC-560/celecoxib by gavage, twice a day for three weeks. To test the mechanism of inhibition of tumor growth by COX selective inhibitors, the index of proliferating cells in tumor tissues was determined by immunostaining and the index of apoptotic cells by the terminal-deoxynucleotidyl-transferase-mediated deoxyuridine triphosphate nick end labeling (TUNEL) method.

The decomposition of peroxymonocarbonate (HCO(4)(-)) has been investigated by flow-injection chemiluminescence (CL) method. An ultraweak CL was observed during mixing the bicarbonate and hydrogen peroxide solution in organic cosolvent. An appropriate amount of fluorescent organic compounds, such as dichlorofluorescein (DCF), was added to the HCO(4)(-) solution, a strong CL was recorded.

In this work, an online preparation of peroxymonocarbonate was formed innovatively, which offered the reliable intermediate for further investigation. Gold colloids with nanoparticles of different sizes were found to enhance the chemiluminescence (CL) of the peroxymonocarbonate-eosin Y system, and the most intensive CL signals were obtained with 50 +/- 1 nm diameter gold nanoparticles. UV-visible adsorption spectra, fluorescence spectra, transmission electron microscopy images, electron paramagnetic resonance spin-trapping spectra, and mass spectra were obtained in order to study the CL enhancement mechanism.

Aligned single-crystal ZnO rod arrays with diameters ranging from 50 nm to 300 nm and length up to 10 microm have been synthesized on silicon substrate under open-air conditions using a combustion chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method. The ZnO rods grew in the direction of (0001) with six [1120] peripheral surface planes. A single ZnO rod solid-state gas sensor fabricated on an interdigitated electrode pattern demonstrated prompt response to ethanol vapor at 400 degrees C.

We report the results of first-principles calculations (generalized gradient approximation-Perdew Wang 1991) on the electronic and vibrational properties of several nickel sulfides that are observed on Ni-based anodes in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) upon exposure to H2S contaminated fuels: heazlewoodite Ni3S2, millerite NiS, polydymite Ni3S4, and pyrite NiS2. The optimized lattice parameters of these sulfides are within 1% of the values determined from x-ray diffraction. The electronic structure analysis indicates that all Ni-S bonds are strongly covalent.

Reaction mechanisms for the interactions between CeO(2)(111) and (110) surfaces are investigated using periodic density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Both standard DFT and DFT+U calculations to examine the effect of the localization of Ce 4f states on the redox chemistry of H(2)-CeO(2) interactions are described. For mechanistic studies, molecular and dissociative local minima are initially located by placing an H(2) molecule at various active sites of the CeO(2) surfaces.

The carbothermal reduction of silica into silicon requires the use of temperatures well above the silicon melting point (> or =2,000 degrees C). Solid silicon has recently been generated directly from silica at much lower temperatures (< or =850 degrees C) via electrochemical reduction in molten salts. However, the silicon products of such electrochemical reduction did not retain the microscale morphology of the starting silica reactants.

A weak chemiluminescent (CL) emission was observed in the decomposition of peroxomonosulfate (HSO5-), which would be accelerated in the presence of trace amounts of cobalt (II). The mechanism was due to the production of singlet oxygen (1O2). Interestedly, riboflavin can enhance the CL and the CL intensity was strongly dependent on riboflavin concentration.

Interactions between O(2) and CeO(2) are examined experimentally using in situ Raman spectroscopy and theoretically using density-functional slab-model calculations. Two distinct oxygen bands appear at 825 and 1131 cm(-1), corresponding to peroxo- and superoxo-like species, respectively, when partially reduced CeO(2) is exposed to 10 % O(2). Periodic density-functional theory (DFT) calculations aid the interpretation of spectroscopic observations and provide energetic and geometric information for the dioxygen species adsorbed on CeO(2).

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) were effectively dispersed and functionalized by wrapping with single-stranded DNA (ssDNA). The ssDNA-SWNTs attach strongly on glass substrate and easily form a uniform film, making it possible for electrochemical analysis and sensing. The film was fabricated into a working electrode, which exhibited good electrochemical voltammetric properties, such as flat and wide potential window, well-defined quasi-reversible voltammetric responses, and quick electron transfer for a Fe(CN)6(3-)/Fe(CN)6(4) system, indicating that the ssDNA-SWNTs film should be a good analytical electrode for electrochemical detection or sensing.

Polycrystalline gadolinia-doped ceria (GDC) surfaces were studied using low-energy (5-400 eV) electron stimulated desorption (ESD). H(+), O(+), and H(3)O(+) were the primary cationic desorption products with H(+) as the dominant channel. H(+), H(3)O(+), and O(+) have a 22 eV threshold followed by a yield change around 40 eV.

We report 1H-1,2,3-triazole as an active group to dramatically enhance proton conduction in a polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM). The conductivities of a poly(4-vinyl-1H-1,2,3-triazole) membrane without any acidic dopants are about 105 times greater than those of poly(4-vinylimidazole) in dry air at 50-150 degrees C. Polymers with groups promoting proton conduction attached to the backbone have great potential to offer excellent mechanical properties and long-term stability.
