Postoperative pain affects most patients after major surgery and can transition to chronic pain. The considerable side effects and limited efficacy of current treatments underline the need for new therapeutic options. We observed increased amounts of the metabolites BH4 and serotonin after skin injury.

Aims/hypothesis: Beta cells control glucose homeostasis via regulated production and secretion of insulin. This function arises from a highly specialised gene expression programme that is established during development and then sustained, with limited flexibility, in terminally differentiated cells. Dysregulation of this programme is seen in type 2 diabetes but mechanisms that preserve gene expression or underlie its dysregulation in mature cells are not well resolved.

Numerous studies of signaling pathways and metabolism on cardiac development and disease pave the way for endogenous cardiomyocyte regeneration. New drug delivery approaches, high-throughput screening, as well as novel therapeutic compounds combined with gene editing will facilitate the development of potential cell-free therapeutics.
