Article Synopsis
  • A reduction in how the brain uses glucose is a key problem in Alzheimer's disease, which is linked to issues with vitamin B1, or thiamine.
  • Researchers tested a new form of thiamine called benfotiamine on mice with Alzheimer’s and found it helped improve their memory and lower brain plaque levels.
  • Unlike another thiamine-related compound, benfotiamine worked better by possibly blocking certain brain enzymes that cause problems in Alzheimer’s, hinting it could be a good option for treating the disease.
