This study aims to improve our understanding of acute ischemic stroke clot imaging by integrating CT attenuation information with MRI susceptibility signal of thrombi. For this proof-of-principle experimental study, fifty-seven clot analogs were produced using ovine venous blood with a broad histological spectrum. Each clot analog was analyzed to determine its RBC content and chemical composition, including water, Fe III, sodium, pH, and pO2.

Aims: Haemophilia is a rare genetic disease that hinders blood clotting. We aimed to review model-based cost-effectiveness analyses (CEAs) of haemophilia treatments, describe the sources of clinical evidence used by these CEAs, summarize the reported cost-effectiveness of different treatment strategies, and assess the quality and risk of bias.

Methods: We conducted a systematic literature review of model-based CEAs of haemophilia treatments by searching databases, the Tufts Medical Center CEA registry, and grey literature.

In this opinion, we offer a new perspective on the important and persistent problem of diagnostic errors for patients with non-specific complaints (NSCs). As an increasing number of complex patients present clinicians with challenging diagnostic work in the time-pressured and high-volume contexts of EDs, we need to improve how clinicians and healthcare organizations can understand and perform safe diagnostics for patients with NSCs. The combination of a growing number of patients with NSCs and the ways in which clinicians use the categories 'non-specific complaints' and 'non-specific diagnosis' in diagnostic work in emergency departments presents a growing patient safety concern especially for older patients with multimorbidity that require the integration of clinical and organizational research.

Modern healthcare systems are increasingly organized according to diagnosis-specific clinical pathways and treatment protocols. At the same time, the number of patients with complex problems and needs that do not fit the single-diagnosis approach is rising, contributing to a high prevalence of diagnostic errors. In this article, we focus on the risk of diagnostic errors arising from missed or incomplete diagnosis and assessment of older adult patients' care needs in the first hours of acute hospitalizations in EDs.

Purpose: Brachial blood pressure (BP) is the current gold standard for BP assessment; however, measures of pulse wave velocity (PWV) and central blood pressure (CBP) may contribute uniquely to assessment of cardiovascular health status. As of yet, standards for assessment of CBP and PWV have not addressed the impact of hydration status on proper measurement. To understand the impact of hydration, PWV and CBP should be measured in a euhydrated and hypohydrated state.

Objectives were to determine the effect of corn silage inclusion within dry-rolled corn (DRC) or steam-flaked corn (SFC) finishing diets on cattle growth performance and carcass characteristics. The experiment used British and continental crossbred steers ( = 480; initial body weight [BW] = 389 ± 17 kg) in a 4 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments with six replications per treatment. Treatments consist of four inclusions of corn silage (0%, 15%, 30%, or 45%; dry matter [DM] basis) within either a DRC or SFC diet.

Article Synopsis
  • Species richness is crucial for understanding biodiversity, highlighting under-studied groups like Darwin wasps, where previous estimates suggested nearly 11,000 species compared to only 2,322 recorded.
  • New estimates based on various data sources indicate that only 13-22% of Darwin wasp species are known in five heavily studied Afrotropical countries, with estimates of total species ranging from 9,206 to 15,577.
  • Factors contributing to the gap between recorded and estimated species richness include logistical and financial challenges, alongside post-colonial influences affecting research efforts.

Background: Piperacillin/tazobactam may be associated with less favourable outcomes than carbapenems in patients with severe bacterial infections, but the certainty of evidence is low.

Methods: The Empirical Meropenem versus Piperacillin/Tazobactam for Adult Patients with Sepsis (EMPRESS) trial is an investigator-initiated, international, parallel-group, randomised, open-label, adaptive clinical trial with an integrated feasibility phase. We will randomise adult, critically ill patients with sepsis to empirical treatment with meropenem or piperacillin/tazobactam for up to 30 days.

Background And Objective: Haemophilia B is a rare genetic disease that is caused by a deficiency of coagulation factor IX (FIX) in the blood and leads to internal and external bleeding. Under the current standard of care, haemophilia is treated either prophylactically or on-demand via intravenous infusions of FIX. These treatment strategies impose a high burden on patients and health care systems as haemophilia B requires lifelong treatment, and FIX is costly.

Qualitative social scientists working in medical faculties have to meet multiple expectations. On the one hand, they are expected to comply with the philosophical and theoretical expectations of the social sciences. On the other hand, they may also be expected to produce publications which align with biomedical definitions and framings of quality.

Objective: Awake craniotomy with intraoperative mapping is the widely accepted procedure for adult patients undergoing supratentorial tumor or epileptogenic focus resection near eloquent cortex. In children, awake craniotomies are notably less common due to concerns for compliance and emotional or psychological repercussions. Despite this, successfully tolerated awake craniotomies have been reported in patients as young as 8 years of age, with success rates comparable to those of adults.

Gene editing using clustered, regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) and CRISPR-associated (Cas) nuclease is an excellent tool for assessing gene function in plants. However, delivery of CRISPR/Cas-editing components into plant cells is still a major bottleneck and requires tissue culture-based approaches and regeneration of plants. To overcome this limitation, several plant viral vectors have recently been engineered to deliver single-guide RNA (sgRNA) targets into SpCas9-expressing plants.

Chloroplast morphology changes during immunity, giving rise to tubule-like structures known as stromules. Stromules extend along microtubules and anchor to actin filaments along nuclei to promote perinuclear chloroplast clustering. This facilitates the transport of defense molecules/proteins from chloroplasts to the nucleus.
