Background: Pre-existing chronic pain has been associated with severe postoperative pain. In this study, we sought to prospectively analyse the association between the duration of chronic low back pain and the intensity of acute postoperative pain after lumbar fusion surgery.

Methods: A total of 330 patients who underwent lumbar fusion surgery were divided into three groups (chronic low back pain less than 1 year, one to 5 years, and more than 5 years) based on the duration of chronic pain.
