Selenium (Se), an essential trace element, plays an important role in the antioxidative defense mechanism, and it has been proven to improve fertility and reproductive efficiency in dairy cattle. The present study evaluated the potential protective action of Se supplement of in vitro maturation (IVM) media on the maturation and subsequent development of bovine cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs) exposed to heat stress (HS). The treatment with Se improved the viability of cumulus cells (CCs) and oocytes (P < 0.

Article Synopsis
  • Hyssopus officinalis (H. officinalis) has been used in traditional medicine to treat seizures, and this study investigated its effectiveness against PTZ-induced seizures in rats.
  • The extract showed dose-dependent anti-seizure effects, increasing the seizure threshold, reducing mortality, and enhancing cognitive functions like memory and learning while also influencing GABA receptors.
  • Results indicated that H. officinalis extract boosts brain antioxidant capacity, decreases harmful substances, and elevates GABA receptor gene expression, suggesting it may play a significant role in managing epilepsy.

Chlorpyrifos (CPF; O, O'-diethyl-3, 5, 6-trichloro-2-pyridyl phosphorothionate) as an organophosphate compound with moderate toxicity that entered the soil in 1965, is widely used as an active substance of many insecticides. CPF may affect some biochemical mechanisms, particularly through disrupting pro- and anti-oxidant balance and inducing free radical-induced oxidative stress. Expired pesticides, if present in ecosystem, may pose new issues of toxicological concern.

Early life stress is associated with various complications. Auraptene has significant antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. This study aimed to assess the probable underlying mechanisms that mediate changes in the behavior, hippocampus, heart and serum in the mouse model of maternal separation (MS) stress.

Background: Previous studies have shown that seizures can cause cognitive disorders. On the other hand, the Curcuma zedoaria (CZ) has beneficial effects on the nervous system. However, there is little information on the possible effects of the CZ extract on seizures.

Objective: Heavy metals such as cadmium (Cd) are widely distributed in the environment as industrial pollutants and characterized by their ability to affect the male reproductive system. The objective of the present study was to test the effect of Cd in the concentration range from 10 to 1000 micromol/L, in vitro, on the membrane and DNA integrity, motility, and ability of sperm to undergo acrosomal exocytosis in Holstein bull spermatozoa.

Methods: Bull semen samples were processed for sperm analyses using semen-diluting fluid, PBS.

Objective: Tobacco smoking is recognized as a general health hazard, and evidence indicates that cigarette smoking affects reproductive health in both men and women. The aim of this study was to provide evidence that cigarette smoking affects male fertility via altering the semen and sperm quality.

Methods: We evaluated the direct effect of seminal plasma (SP) (in the different dilutions with PBS, 1/0; 1/1; 1/2; 1/6; 1/10) from smokers (SM) on spermatozoa from non-smokers (NSM).

In recent years, the quality of human sperm and its fertility potential have decreased dramatically. This may suggest that the quality of semen has deteriorated partly due to the effects of increasing toxic factors in the environment. Infertility remains a major problem in society, and recent data show that as many as one in four couples is trying to solve the problem.
