With progressive globalisation enabled by technology, there is an increased interest in finding viable solutions to the myriad health problems faced by developing countries. In countries like Pakistan, occasionally the challenge is not a dearth of material resources but rather unavailability of expertise. The current paper was planned to share a model that was successfully implemented in the urban setting of Karachi, Pakistan, from 2012 onwards which significantly improved access to thoracic surgery for underprivileged individuals.

Septo-Optic Dysplasia in a Newborn Presenting with Bilateral Dilated and Fixed Pupils.

Introduction We describe a newborn female infant with septo-optic dysplasia (SOD) presenting with bilateral dilated and fixed pupils. Conclusion Our report is unique because the incidental finding of bilateral dilated and fixed pupils on the newborn exam was the only clinical finding which led to a prompt work-up and eventual diagnosis of SOD.

Reducing transfusion-associated malaria in Pakistan: an algorithmic approach.

Blood transfusions represent a small but significant source of malaria transmission. Most blood banks rely solely on donor questioning to exclude malaria patients from donating blood. No guidelines exist for in vitro screening of donor blood for malaria in endemic areas.

Risk factors predisposing to congenital heart defects.

Introduction: Congenital heart disease (CHD) is associated with multiple risk factors, consanguinity may be one such significant factor. The role of consanguinity in the etiology of CHD is supported by inbreeding studies, which demonstrate an autosomal recessive pattern of inheritance of some congenital heart defects. This study was done to find out the risk factors for CHD.

Impact of today's media on university student's body image in Pakistan: a conservative, developing country's perspective.

Background: Living in a world greatly controlled by mass media makes it impossible to escape its pervading influence. As media in Pakistan has been free in the true sense of the word for only a few years, its impact on individuals is yet to be assessed. Our study aims to be the first to look at the effect media has on the body image of university students in a conservative, developing country like Pakistan.

Impact of interventions to prevent and manage preeclampsia and eclampsia on stillbirths.

Background: Pre-eclampsia and Eclampsia are relatively common complications of pregnancy, leading to considerable maternal and fetal mortality and morbidity. We sought to review the effect of aspirin, calcium supplementation, antihypertensive agents and magnesium sulphate on risk stillbirths.

Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted to identify studies evaluating the above interventions.
