2-Furfurylthiol is the representative aroma compound of Chinese sesame-flavored baijiu. Previous studies demonstrated that baijiu yeasts could generate 2-furfurylthiol using furfural and l-cysteine as precursors and that the Saccharomyces cerevisiae genes STR3 and CYS3 are closely related to 2-furfurylthiol biosynthesis. To confirm the mechanism of the STR3- and CYS3-gene products on 2-furfurylthiol biosynthesis, their encoded proteins were purified, and we confirmed their activities as carbon-sulfur lyases.

Hydroxysteroid (17β) dehydrogenases (HSD17Bs) form an enzyme family characterized by their ability to catalyze reactions in steroid and lipid metabolism. In the present study, we characterized the phenotype of HSD17B13-knockout (HSD17B13KO) mice deficient in Hsd17b13. In these studies, hepatic steatosis was detected in HSD17B13KO male mice, indicated by histologic analysis and by the increased triglyceride concentration in the liver, whereas reproductive performance and serum steroid concentrations were normal in HSD17B13KO mice.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a lifelong progressive neurodegenerativa disease related with accumulation of amyloid β peptide (Aβ) produced by processing of amyloid precursor protein (APP) in the brain. In spite of several-decades effort on AD, there is still no medicine used to intervene with its pathological processes. Our previous studies made in transgenic animal models harboring familial AD genes of mutant presenilin 1 and amyloid precursor protein (APP) showed that βAR gene knock-out (βAR-KO) is beneficial in senile AD animals.

The development of castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) is associated with the activation of intratumoral androgen biosynthesis and an increase in androgen receptor (AR) expression. We recently demonstrated that, similarly to the clinical CRPC, orthotopically grown castration-resistant VCaP (CR-VCaP) xenografts express high levels of AR and retain intratumoral androgen concentrations similar to tumors grown in intact mice. Herein, we show that antiandrogen treatment (enzalutamide or ARN-509) significantly reduced (10-fold, P < 0.

Article Synopsis
  • Falls among the elderly are a significant cause of death, especially in developing countries like Pakistan, where reporting is poor; thus, a fall detection prototype is proposed.
  • A dataset called 'SMotion' was created using Shimmer sensors to identify risky postures, sorted by age and weight, along with a classification system utilizing SVM, KNN, and NN for real-time monitoring.
  • The KNN classifier performed best with high accuracy rates, validating the effectiveness of the prototype in alerting caregivers and emergency services during falls.
