/ Congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction (CNLDO) is commonly treated by probing, but recurrence remains a clinical issue. This study investigates the potential role of inflammatory biomarkers, such as the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR), and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), in predicting recurrence after probing in children with CNLDO. This retrospective cohort study included 172 patients who underwent initial probing for unilateral CNLDO.

Background: This cross-sectional study aims to investigate the retino-choroidal degenerative effects of periodontitis, metabolic syndrome (Mets), and the combination of these diseases using optical coherence tomography (OCT) measurements.

Methods: Ninety-two patients selected according to inclusion criteria were divided into four groups: systemically and periodontally healthy (control), systemically healthy periodontitis (PD), periodontally healthy metabolic syndrome (MetS), and periodontitis and metabolic syndrome combined (PD-MetS). The systemic inflammatory-oxidative effects of periodontitis and MetS were biochemically evaluated using the serum TNF-α level, IL-1β/IL-10 ratio, and oxidative stress index (OSI: TOS/TAS).

Background: Inflammation plays a significant role in the proliferation, migration, and differentiation of lens epithelial cells after cataract surgery, clinically manifested as posterior capsule opacification (PCO). This condition is typically treated with neodymium: yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Nd:YAG) laser capsulotomy. Our objective is to evaluate the association between blood-derived inflammatory markers and the development of clinically significant PCO necessitating treatment with laser capsulotomy.

Background: Visual impairment can cause balance problems. Therefore, visual impairment caused by an increase in corneal deviations can lead to sudden and unstable loads in the lower extremities. We aimed to investigate the possible relationship between low-energy meniscal injuries and corneal structural measures.

Every year, hundreds of thousands of cancer patients receive radiotherapy treatment. Oxidative stress is observed in healthy tissues due to irradiation exposure. The present study is the first to address the effects of Vaccinium myrtillus (whortleberry, WB) against the effects of X-ray irradiation on retinal tissue.

Objectives: This study was a comparison of the outcomes of transcanalicular multidiode laser dacryocystorhinostomy (TCLDCR) and external dacryocystorhinostomy (EXDCR) treatment for patients with acquired nasolacrimal duct obstruction.

Methods: Thirty-one consecutive patients who underwent TCLDCR (TCLDCR group) and 68 consecutive patients who underwent EXDCR (EXDCR group) due to acquired nasolacrimal duct obstruction were enrolled in the study. Follow-up visits were performed on the first day, and at the first week, first month, third month, sixth month, and every six months thereafter.

Objectives: Keratoconus (KCN) is a disorder that usually appears during adolescence and progressively reduces visual acuity. KCN may lead to differences in personality features as a result of vision loss and the numerous clinical examinations and treatment methods used from a young age. The aim of this study was to better understand the psychological characteristics of KCN patients and to define possible correlations between corneal topographic parameters and psychological state.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the relationship between epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) thickness and hypertensive retinopathy, highlighting the role of EAT in endothelial dysfunction and inflammation.
  • Out of 73 newly diagnosed hypertensive patients, 37% showed signs of retinopathy, and those with retinopathy had greater EAT thickness and higher LDL cholesterol levels compared to those without.
  • The findings suggest that both EAT thickness and LDL cholesterol are independent predictors of retinopathy in hypertensive patients, indicating a potential marker for monitoring eye health in these individuals.

Background: To evaluate alterations in the serum concentrations of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and netrin-1 after intravitreal bevacizumab (BCZ) injection for the treatment of diabetic macular edema (DME).

Methods: This prospective case-control study included a total of 50 participants assigned to one of three groups, including 10 individuals with DME and non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR), 13 with DME, and proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR), and 27 healthy individuals as a control group. Serum VEGF and netrin-1 concentrations were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) immediately before, as well as 1 week and 1 month after, intravitreal BCZ injection.

Purpose: To investigate the impact of oxygen delivery on the clinical outcomes of accelerated transepithelial corneal cross-linking (A-TE CXL).

Methods: Fifty-seven eyes of 44 progressive keratoconus (KCN) patients were randomly separated into two age-sex-matched groups. Twenty-nine eyes of 23 KCN patients that underwent oxygen-supplemented A-TE CXL formed the study group and 28 eyes of 21 patients treated with the same procedure but under room air conditions formed the control group.

Purpose: To investigate the effect of hybrid contact lenses (HCLs) on keratoconus (KCN) progression after accelerated transepithelial cross-linking (A-TE CXL).

Methods: Thirty-five eyes of 26 patients who preferred Ultrahealth HCLs for an optical correction after A-TE CXL formed the study group, and 45 eyes of 34 patients who preferred spectacle correction were age- and sex-matched to form the control group. Corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), maximum keratometry, mean keratometry, apical posterior keratometry, cylindrical power, minimum corneal thickness, keratoconus vertex indices and curvature asymmetry indices obtained by Scheimpflug corneal topography were compared before, 6 and 12 months after the procedure.
