Article Synopsis
  • The rapid population growth in urban areas has led to increased housing demand, often resulting in designs that disregard local climate factors.
  • Erzurum, a cold city in Turkey, is the focus of research analyzing the effects of urban form on thermal comfort and air pollution.
  • The study involved measuring areas, using physiologically equivalent temperature (PET) analysis, and recording air pollution data to show that higher urban density correlates with increased air pollution and varying thermal comfort levels.

Trees in urban areas are important for their ecological functions in addition to their esthetic characteristics. Trees provide positive effects on urban microclimate by canopy, reflection, and transpiration activities; therefore, they help to decline formation of heat island. The objective of this study was to determine thermal effects of 15 different tree types: 4 coniferous and 11 deciduous species commonly found in the city of Erzurum located at the northeastern part of Turkey.
