Background: Several healthcare-associated infection outbreaks have been caused by waterborne Pseudomonas aeruginosa exhibiting its ability to colonize water systems and resist conventional chlorine treatment. This study aims to investigate the occurrence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in hospital drinking water systems and the antimicrobial resistance profiles (antibiotic and chlorine resistance) of isolated strains.

Methods: We investigated the presence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in water and biofilms developed in nine hospital water systems (n = 192) using culture-based and molecular methods.

Cardiac aging involves the development of left ventricular hypertrophy alongside a decline in functional capacity. Here, we use neutral blood exchange to demonstrate that the acute removal of age-accumulated blood factors significantly regresses cardiac hypertrophy in aged mice. The reversal of hypertrophy was not attributed to age-associated hemodynamic effects, implicating a role of blood-derived factors.

We describe a small-animal blood exchange approach developed for aging research as an alternative to heterochronic parabiosis or plasma injections. In parabiosis, animals are surgically coupled, which has several disadvantages, including difficulty controlling experimental procedure, the effects of shared organs, environmental enrichment from jointly exploring the housing enclosure, involuntary exercise and an imprecise onset of blood sharing. Likewise, in plasma injections, the added volumes need to be small, and there is little flexibility in changing the relative contributions of ectopic to endogenous blood components.

Photocatalytic membrane reactors (PMRs), coupling photocatalysts and membranes in a single system, have shown a considerable potential to reduce membrane fouling, which is one of the major drawbacks of using membranes to treat water and wastewater. In this study, the visible light-activated photocatalysts were incorporated into the polyacrylonitrile (PAN) casting solution to synthesize the photocatalytic composite membranes. A new type of gold-coated magnetic nanoparticle with strongly magnetic zero-valent iron core-iron oxide shell were synthesized. The small size of the magnetic cores and the zero-valent iron ensured superparamagnetic behaviour and high saturation magnetization of the overall nanoparticles. The nanoparticles showed stability against magnetic aggregation and good colloidal stability, which is important for many biomedical applications.

Aging is associated with the impairment of stem cell activation, leading to the functional decline of tissues and increasing the risk for age-associated diseases. The old, damaged or unrepaired tissues disturb distant tissue homeostasis by secreting factors into the circulation, which may not only serve as biomarkers for specific age-associated pathologies but also induce a variety of degenerative phenotypes. Our recent study has established that young blood factors are not causal, nor necessary, for the systemic rejuvenation of mammalian tissues.
