Decomposition of aqueous monofluorophenols (MFPs) was investigated by contact glow discharge electrolysis (CGDE). During CGDE, both MFPs and the corresponding total organic carbon (TOC) in water were consumed smoothly, suggesting that carbon atoms of benzene nucleus could be eventually mineralized to inorganic carbon (IC). And all the fluorine atoms in the MFPs were equally converted to fluoride ions.

Electroreductive dechlorination of chlorophenols with Pd catalyst supported on solidelectrode was studied. As solid electrodes, carbon cloth (CC), carbon felt (CF) and titanium mesh were used, and palladium was plated on solid electrodes by either electrolytic or electroless method. On each electrode with Pd, chlorophenols were qualitatively dechlorinated to phenol, while they were entirely intact on electrodes without Pd.

Scanning confocal electron microscopy (SCEM) is a new imaging technique that is capable of depth sectioning with nanometer-scale depth resolution. However, the depth resolution in the optical axis direction (Z) is worse than might be expected on the basis of the vertical electron probe size calculated with the existence of spherical aberration. To investigate the origin of the degradation, the effects of electron energy loss and chromatic aberration on the depth resolution of annular dark-field SCEM were studied through both experiments and computational simulations.

Optical sectioning using scanning confocal electron microscopy (SCEM) is a new three-dimensional (3D) imaging technique which promises improved depth resolution, particularly for laterally extended objects. Using a stage-scanning system to move the specimen in three dimensions, two-dimensional (2D) images sliced from any plane in XYZ space can be obtained in shorter acquisition times than those required for conventional electron tomography. In this paper, a double aberration-corrected SCEM used in annular dark-field mode was used to observe the 3D structure of SiO(2) hollow spheres fabricated by a carbon template method.

Exhaustive mineralization of pentachlorophenolate ion (PCP) in phosphate buffer was carried out using anodic contact glow discharge electrolysis (CGDE), in which plasma was sustained between the electrolyte and anode. During CGDE, PCP degraded smoothly. The amount of total organic carbon decreased significantly, indicating the eventual conversion of the carbon atoms of benzene nucleus to inorganic carbons.

With the decay of monochlorophenols, the amount of total organic carbon (TOC) also decreased smoothly, indicating that carbon atoms of benzene nucleus could be eventually converted to inorganic carbons. Low-valent zirconocene species reacted with 1,1,6,6-tetraalkyl-1,2,3,4,5-hexapentaenes to form both 1-zirconacyclopent-3-ynes and eta2-pi-coordinated complexes according to the alkyl groups (R) and the existence of the neutral ligand (L). Haptotropic interconvertion between these two complexes was observed. It was proposed that double insertion of isocyanide into the Zr-C bond of 1-zirconacyclopent-3-ynes takes place via the isocyanide adduct of the eta2-pi-complex as an intermediate.

The transfer of the IncP-7 carbazole degradative plasmid pCAR1 from Pseudomonas putida SM1443 (derived from strain KT2440) into bacteria of river water samples was monitored using a reporter gene encoding red fluorescent protein (RFP). The number of transconjugants drastically increased in the presence of carbazole, and most appeared to belong to the genus Pseudomonas. The results suggest that the presence of carbazole benefits the appearance of transconjugants belonging to the genus Pseudomonas.

Mineralization of aqueous alkylbenzenesulfonates (ABS) was investigated by means of contact glow discharge electrolysis (CGDE). Toluenesulfonic and dodecylbenzenesulfonic acids in a neutral phosphate buffer solution were smoothly degraded and eventually converted to inorganic carbon and sulfate ion when CGDE was conducted under the applied DC voltage of 500 V and current of ca. 90 mA.
