Aims: Left atrial (LA) volume index (LAVI) in chronic heart failure (HF) predicts cardiovascular outcomes. However, the association between LAVI reduction during acute decompensated HF (ADHF) and its prognostic potential is limited. We hypothesized that LA reverse remodelling (LARR) after ADHF therapy would be associated with better clinical outcomes.

Aim: Hepatitis A (HA) is a vaccine-preventable disease. In regions with good sanitation, men who have sex with men (MSM) are the key affected populations. During the 2018-2019 HA outbreak among MSM in Japan, we actively vaccinated MSM living with HIV (MSM-LWHIV) with Aimmugen.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated the connection between inactivated influenza vaccination and viral load in children under 6 in Japan over several flu seasons.
  • Researchers analyzed 1,185 influenza-positive children and found that the viral loads did not significantly differ based on vaccination status, with median values around 5.5 for all groups.
  • Key factors impacting viral load included specific influenza subtypes and children's temperature, indicating that vaccination status did not play a role in viral load differences.

  • Limited data exists on the cardiac structure of rugby athletes, prompting a study that examined 114 young Japanese collegiate players using echocardiography and cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET).
  • The findings revealed that these athletes showed larger left ventricular, atrial, and aortic dimensions compared to previous studies, with forwards and backs presenting different muscular and endurance traits.
  • Additionally, 16% displayed abnormal left ventricular geometry, with higher resting systolic blood pressure noted in those with concentric geometry, highlighting unique cardiac remodeling and potential subclinical cardiovascular risks among young athletes.

  • In 2013, Japan introduced the HPV vaccine as a national immunization program but later chose not to make proactive recommendations due to reported symptoms after vaccination.
  • A survey of pediatricians from the Osaka Pediatric Association showed a significant increase in the number of doctors offering the HPV vaccine, rising from 44.5% in 2020 to 67.9% in 2021.
  • Despite the lack of proactive recommendations and concerns from the Ministry of Health, most pediatricians maintained a positive attitude towards the HPV vaccine, with 77.9% expressing support in 2021 and 78.3% showing minimal concerns about the vaccination.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates how prior vaccination affects the effectiveness of the current influenza vaccine in children aged 1-5 years during the 2016/17 and 2017/18 seasons in Japan.
  • The research looked at 799 influenza cases and 1196 controls, categorizing their vaccination status into six groups to analyze vaccine effectiveness (VE). Overall, the effectiveness varied by vaccination history, but one- and two-dose VEs were significant regardless of prior vaccination.
  • The findings suggest that even with prior vaccinations, the current season's vaccines maintain effectiveness, as demonstrated by varying VE percentages among different vaccination groups.

Aim: After the hepatitis A virus (HAV) outbreak among men who have sex with men (MSM) around 2018, the importance of HAV vaccination was emphasized, especially for MSM-living with human immunodeficiency virus (MSM-LWHIV). Aimmugen is licensed and distributed exclusively in Japan. While administration of three doses is recommended, 85% of recipients in the general population were reported to acquire seroprotection after the second dose.

Introduction: Survival among people living with HIV (PLWH) has dramatically improved in the antiretroviral therapy (ART) era. This is the first study in Asia to describe three decades of surveys on survival and causes of death among PLWH.

Methods: We included 1121 HIV-infected patients, categorized into three period groups according to date of first visit: 1986-1996 (Pre-ART); 1997-2007 (Early-ART); and 2008-2018 (Late-ART).

Background And Purpose: Cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) is related to motor function disturbance. It includes several types: lacunar infarction, white matter hyperintensity, cerebral microbleeds (CMBs), and enlarged perivascular spaces (EPVS). Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) has been successfully used to evaluate the function of the pyramidal tract.

In Japan, nutrition education programs to prevent osteoporosis and osteoporotic fractures have focused primarily on increasing dietary calcium intake and recommended the consumption of milk and dairy products. However, the effect of milk and dairy product consumption on bone density loss or fracture incidence in Japanese has rarely been evaluated in randomized controlled studies. In the present study, we reviewed the literature investigating the consumption of milk and dairy products in relation to bone density and fracture risk.

Soybean and various types of soy products, such as natto, tofu, miso, and soy sauce, have long been consumed in Japan. Soybean, a rich source of plant proteins, contains a relatively high amount of calcium as well as being an important source of isoflavones, a group of substances whose chemical structure is similar to that of estrogen. Natto, fermented soybeans, contains vitamin K, which is involved in the activation of osteocalcin.

For prevention of osteoporosis and debilitating bone fractures, poor calcium intake has long been a major public health problem in Japan. However, few randomized controlled studies have been conducted to clarify the relationship between calcium intake and bone mineral density, and the effect of the prevention of bone fractures. Therefore we reviewed the articles about the evidence for calcium intake and bone fracture incidence in European, American and Asian.

One of the main focuses of lifestyle modification for the prevention of osteoporosis and osteoporotic fractures in Japan is improvement in dietary calcium intake. However, virtually no randomized controlled trial to assess the preventive effects of administration of calcium on the risk of fractures has been conducted in Japan. In this study, we reviewed all the scientific papers currently available from medical literature databases to propose evidence-based recommendations on the preventive procedures for osteoporosis.

To clarify the mutation of the flavin-containing monooxygenase (FMO) 3 gene causing fish-odor syndrome, we analyzed the FMO3 gene of a Thai subject who possibly suffered from fish-odor syndrome. A novel mutation, a single-base substitution from G to A at the position of 265 (G265A), was identified in exon 3. The mutation caused an amino acid substitution from valine to isoleucine at residue 58 (V58I).
