Cryptosporidiosis is a major cause of diarrhea and is associated with high morbidity in calves. Changes in the gut microbiota exacerbate diarrhea caused by infection in neonatal and weaned calves. However, information on the gut microbiota of neonatal calves with infection is scarce, and research into the microbiome of calves is essential for developing preventive and therapeutic interventions.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFFecal corticosterone metabolite (FCM) concentrations, which can be determined noninvasively, have recently been explored as a stress indicator in birds. In our study, we measured FCM concentrations in penguins under nonmolting or molting conditions, cool or hot season, diseased condition, and incubation period. These measurements were conducted in an aquarium that housed king penguins, gentoo penguins, and African penguins.

The results showed that the isolates were classified into three major groups. Group II contained most of the azole-resistant strains with 34- and 46-bp tandem repeats in cyp51A promoter.

On conducting computed tomography, two gentoo penguins (Pygoscelis papua) with respiratory clinical signs that were housed at an aquarium in Hokkaido, Japan were found to have a certain amount of fluid in their air sacs. This fluid was collected and cultured for bacteria and fungi, the results of which both came back negative.

P. bovis infects cows throughout the lactation cycle, including dry periods, and can persist in the udder and the environment for a long time.

Jersey cows easily develop peripartum hypocalcemia compared with other dairy cows. The early detection and treatment of hypocalcemia are particularly important for Jersey cows because delayed treatment can result in various complications.

Despite progress, ongoing gaps persist in diagnosis, continuity of care, and treatment optimization. In response, the United States President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief created the Faith-based Action for Scaling-Up Testing and Treatment for Epidemic Response (FASTER).

Data on hypertension prevalence in Zambia are scarce and limited to specific geographic areas and/or populations. We measured hypertension prevalence among persons living with HIV (PLHIV) in Zambia using a national electronic health record (EHR) system.

Responses were obtained for 2910 penguins in 64 facilities; 73 penguins (2.5%) in 35 facilities had died from aspergillosis during the past 5 years from April 2016 to March 2021.

Moreover, surgical removal of an ectopic testis is difficult in certain clinical cases. Recently, immunocastration has garnered popularity as a nonsurgical castration method in pig farming; however, the effects of immunocastration on cryptorchid bulls are yet to be yet.

To understand trends in pediatric/adolescent VL testing, 7 countries collected data from Laboratory Information Management Systems. Results showed increasing proportion of VL tests done through dried blood spot (DBS) and decreased sample rejection rates for DBS compared with plasma, supporting use of DBS VL when skilled phlebotomy is unavailable.

Utilization of Zambia's electronic health record (EHR) system, SmartCare, may address this gap. We analyzed individuals aged ≥ 15 years who initiated PrEP between October 2020 and September 2021 in four provinces in Zambia in SmartCare versus aggregate reports.

Objectives: To describe the characteristics and outcomes of patients admitted to COVID-19 treatment centers, assess risk factors for in-hospital death, and explore how treatment center admissions were affected by COVID-19 waves in Zambia.
Design, Setting, And Participants: This retrospective cohort study assessed patients admitted to COVID-19 treatment centers in 5 Zambian cities between March 1, 2020, and February 28, 2022.
Introduction: Delayed HIV diagnosis in HIV-exposed infants (HEIs) results in missed opportunities for early antiretroviral therapy (ART), causing significant morbidity and mortality. Early infant diagnosis (EID) depends on the availability of accessible and reliable testing services. We explored the acceptability, appropriateness, and feasibility of deploying a targeted community-based point-of-care (POC) EID testing model (i.

Sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP), given for intermittent preventive therapy of malaria in pregnancy (IPTp), is one of few existing interventions that improves outcomes of both mother and baby despite widespread SP-resistant malaria. Compelling evidence exists that malaria-independent pathways contribute to this protective effect, but the exact sources of non anti-malarial protection remained unknown.

Therefore, the successful treatment of respiratory diseases remains difficult after the onset of clinical signs, leading to high mortality rates. In this study, we measured air sac volume using computed tomography (CT) to evaluate the respiratory condition of penguins.

A ureteroarterial fistula with indwelling ureteral stent is rare but highly fatal, and there are several reports of ureteroarterial fistula treated by conventional polymer stents, although there are no reports on metallic stents. To our knowledge, this paper describes the first case of a ureteroiliac artery fistula caused by a full-length metallic ureteral stent in malignant ureteral obstruction.
