Article Synopsis
  • - Polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) is an inflammatory disorder marked by muscle pain and stiffness, mainly affecting the hip and shoulder areas, with high levels of CRP and ESR, but its exact causes are still unclear.
  • - The report discusses three PMR patients who didn't respond well to standard treatments, presenting common symptoms such as muscle pain and weakness, and elevated CRP levels without increased creatine kinase.
  • - Examination of muscle samples from these patients revealed signs of vasculitis, suggesting that muscular limited vasculitis (MLV) could be a potential underlying issue in these difficult-to-treat PMR cases.

Article Synopsis
  • Paraneoplastic neurological syndromes (PNS) are disorders linked to tumors, where anti-neural antibodies may be present, and cerebellar ataxia is a common example in breast cancer patients.
  • Improvement in symptoms has typically been observed in patients with positive anti-neural antibodies, but this case highlights a 78-year-old woman whose neurological symptoms improved after surgery for breast cancer despite negative antibody tests.
  • The patient’s ataxia was quantitatively assessed using the Scale for the Assessment and Rating of Ataxia (SARA), showing significant improvement post-surgery, suggesting that breast cancer treatment could benefit patients who are negative for anti-neural antibodies.

Guidelines for cardiovascular drug therapy recommend monitoring serum digoxin concentration (SDC) in patients receiving digoxin treatment, especially those with renal dysfunction and hypokalemia. However, only a few studies have reported the prevalence of SDC monitoring and laboratory testing in clinical practice. Therefore, the aim of this study was to describe the frequency of SDC monitoring and laboratory testing in digoxin users and to assess the association between SDC monitoring and patient characteristics.

Biotin is an essential micronutrient, and is a cofactor for several carboxylases that are involved in the metabolism of glucose, fatty acids, and amino acids. Because plant cells can synthesize their own biotin, a wide variety of plant-based foods contains significant amounts of biotin; however, the influence of environmental conditions on the biotin content in plants remains largely unclear. In the present study, we investigated the effects of different cultivation conditions on the biotin content and biotin synthesis in pea sprouts (Pisum sativum).

No guidelines for supportive drug therapy have been established for oral mucositis occurring during cancer chemotherapy. We retrospectively examined the progression of oral mucositis in 91 patients with breast cancer who received the 5-fluorouracil, epirubicin, and cyclophosphamide (FEC)-100 regimen between September 2007 and August 2008. Daily rebamipide was administered to patients with oral mucositis as per hospital protocol to evaluate the hypothesized preventive and mucosal protective effects of rebamipide(Mucosta®).

Phosphorus directly controls parathyroid hormone (PTH) synthesis and secretion. Serum levels of the novel phosphate-regulating hormone, fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23), are positively correlated with hyperphosphatemia in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Rats were fed a diet containing adenine for 4 weeks to establish CKD.

Background: Dietary phosphate restriction suppresses parathyroid hormone (PTH) secretion, synthesis, and parathyroid cell proliferation in experimental animals with chronic renal insufficiency (CRI), independently of serum calcium and 1,25(OH)2D3 levels. This study was conducted to examine whether sevelamer hydrochloride (sevelamer), a metal-free phosphate binder, could regress an advanced parathyroid gland (PTG) hyperplasia and enlargement in rats with CRI.

Methods: Male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed a diet containing adenine for 6 weeks to establish CRI.
