Importance: Many health care systems offer adolescents access to health information through online patient portals, but few studies have explored how to engage adolescents in using and benefiting from online portals.

Objective: To determine how US children's hospitals have attempted to encourage adolescent portal use, barriers to engaging adolescents, and ideal future goals for engagement.

Design, Setting, And Participants: This qualitative study performed structured qualitative interviews with informatics administrators from children's hospitals across the US between February and July 2022.

Chlorate has become a concern in the food and beverage sector, related to chlorine sanitizers in industrial food production and water treatment. It is of particular concern to regulatory bodies due to the negative health effects of chlorate exposure. This study investigated the fate of chlorate in raw milk and isolated bacterial strains of interest responsible for chlorate breakdown.

The Application of Metagenomics to Study Microbial Communities and Develop Desirable Traits in Fermented Foods.

The microbial communities present within fermented foods are diverse and dynamic, producing a variety of metabolites responsible for the fermentation processes, imparting characteristic organoleptic qualities and health-promoting traits, and maintaining microbiological safety of fermented foods. In this context, it is crucial to study these microbial communities to characterise fermented foods and the production processes involved. High Throughput Sequencing (HTS)-based methods such as metagenomics enable microbial community studies through amplicon and shotgun sequencing approaches.

Advice to Clinicians on Communication from Adolescents and Young Adults with Cancer and Parents of Children with Cancer.

Effective communication is integral to patient and family-centered care in pediatric and adolescent and young adult (AYA) oncology and improving healthcare delivery and outcomes. There is limited knowledge about whether AYAs and parents have similar communication preferences and needs. By eliciting and comparing communication advice from AYAs and parents, we can identify salient guidance for how clinicians can better communicate.

Factors Associated with Refractory Status Epilepticus Termination Following Ketamine Initiation: A Multivariable Analysis Model.

Background: In this study, we identify factors associated with ketamine success in the treatment of refractory status epilepticus (SE). We also evaluate for adverse events including systemic and cerebral hemodynamic stability and fluid volume overload.

Methods: In this retrospective, large, single-center, observational study over a 10-year period, 879 consecutive patients receiving intravenous (IV) ketamine were reviewed, and 81 patients were identified as receiving IV ketamine for the treatment of SE.

LCM metabolism through several cytochrome P450 enzymes and minor glucuronidation metabolism in the liver may increase during pregnancy and theoretically lead to lower LCM levels during pregnancy and the risk of increased seizures. Our objective was to determine the impact of pregnancy on serum LCM levels in a series of women with epilepsy (WWE).

Anti-Glutamic acid decarboxylase antibodies (GAD) are increasingly diagnosed in the clinic and this antibody related syndromes can manifest commonly as autoimmune encephalitis, Stiff person syndrome and cerebellar ataxia. However, it is unclear if the race has role in age of incidence, presentation and severity of symptoms of anti-GAD associated conditions. In our cohort of 40 patients who were anti-GAD positive, we observed that the age at which the anti-GAD titers turned out to be positive was significantly lower in African Americans (AA) compared to Caucasians (Cau) irrespective of the type of conditions.

Eucalyptus oil inhalation-induced seizure: A novel, underrecognized, preventable cause of acute symptomatic seizure.

Eucalyptus oil (EO) is an essential oil that is widely used across the globe as an over-the-counter remedy for common ailments. EO-induced seizure (EOIS) has not been recognized as an entity, and physicians rarely ask the history of exposure to eucalyptus oil when seeing a patient with first episode of seizure. Here we report 10 cases of EO inhalation-induced seizures seen over the past 2 years in three tertiary care hospitals.

Post herpes zoster SUNCT like syndrome: Insights from two case reports.

Background SUNCT like syndrome secondary to post herpes zoster infection has not been reported in literature. Case We are reporting two cases of SUNCT like syndrome secondary to post herpes zoster infection of the V1 distribution of the trigeminal nerve. Treatment with pregabalin and lamotrigine achieved complete symptomatic relief in both patients.
