Aims: Amiodarone reduces the incidence of atrial fibrillation (AF) following coronary artery bypass surgery; however, the benefit of perioperative amiodarone in patients undergoing septal myectomy (SM) for obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (oHCM) has not been studied. We hypothesized that prophylactic amiodarone would reduce the incidence of postoperative AF (POAF) following SM for oHCM.

Methods And Results: A single-centre, pre-post intervention open-label study of oral amiodarone (200 mg twice daily starting 7 days preoperatively and 200 mg once daily continuing for 30 days postoperatively) in patients without prior AF undergoing SM for oHCM from 2014 to 2018.

Background: The p.Val142Ile variant, predominantly found among people of African descent, is the most common cause of variant transthyretin amyloidosis and carriers predominantly develop a cardiomyopathy (variant transthyretin amyloidosis cardiomyopathy) phenotype. Yet, there are conflicting data on the prevalence and outcomes of p.

Septal myectomy is the standard treatment for obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. We studied the impact of intraoperative pre- and postprocedure dobutamine stress transesophageal echocardiography on surgical planning and outcomes of septal myectomy. We identified 55 patients undergoing septal myectomy over a 24-month period.

Background: Thrill-seeking activities are a favorite pastime for people of all ages. Patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) are often barred from participation on the basis of danger for arrhythmias. Our aim was to collect information regarding the safety of thrill-seeking activities for HCM patients.

We use a community based participatory research approach to examine the processes of collaboration and communication, as well as the relational interactions of one community focused health promotion coalition, the Community Faces of Utah (CFU). We assess the evolution, structure, successes, and challenges of the coalition, comprised of five distinct cultural communities, a state health department, and a university. Researchers from the university collaborated with the coalition to find that CFU is an equitable, collaborative partnership of diverse leaders that functions successfully.

Background: Septal myectomy has been the mainstay of the surgical treatment of obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM); however, recently there is growing appreciation for associated mitral valve abnormalities that contribute to left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) obstruction. In this study, we describe our experience with combined papillary muscle realignment (PMR) and septal myectomy for the treatment of obstructive HCM.

Methods: We identified 44 patients undergoing surgery for obstructive HCM whose anatomy was amenable to combined PMR and septal myectomy at our institution over a 20-month period.
