Objective: To determine if RBC distribution width (RDW), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and other hematological parameters are associated with increased odds of in-hospital mortality, increased length of hospitalization (LOH), or disease severity as measured by the Canine Acute Pancreatitis Severity (CAPS) score in dogs with acute pancreatitis (AP).
Design: Retrospective, multicenter study from January 2016 to August 2020.
Setting: Four private emergency and specialty referral centers.
Objectives: This study investigated the impact of cancer diagnosis status, individual feelings of preparedness, and other covariates on objective emergency preparedness among women diagnosed with gynecological cancers before or after the 2017 Hurricanes Irma and Maria in Puerto Rico.
Methods: This study included 240 women who were interviewed by telephone from 9/2019-11/2020. Objective emergency preparedness was assessed using a list of six items.
Protein oligomerization is one mechanism by which homogenous solutions can separate into distinct liquid phases, enabling assembly of membraneless organelles. Survival Motor Neuron (SMN) is the eponymous component of a large macromolecular complex that chaperones biogenesis of eukaryotic ribonucleoproteins and localizes to distinct membraneless organelles in both the nucleus and cytoplasm. SMN forms the oligomeric core of this complex, and missense mutations within its YG box domain are known to cause Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA).

The American Academy of Paediatrics recommends 12 well-child visits between birth and age 3 years. Each well-child visit provides a unique opportunity to interact with and support families to promote social emotional development of children.

Aims: The primary aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of financial distress among cancer survivors residing in Appalachian Kentucky with a specific focus on the impact of rurality and to elucidate the risk factors impacting financial distress among this population.
Over 70,000 US young adults are diagnosed with cancer annually, disrupting important life transitions and goal pursuits. Hope is a positive psychology construct associated with better quality of life (QOL) that focuses on goal-oriented thinking. We developed and tested Achieving Wellness After Kancer in Early life (AWAKE), a scalable 8-week app-based program consisting of educational videos, mood/activity tracking, and telephone-based coaching to promote hope and QOL in young adult cancer survivors (YACS, 18-40 years old).

Methods: Three National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated cancer centers with Appalachian counties in their respective population-based geographic service areas-Kentucky, Ohio, and Pennsylvania-surveyed their communities to better understand their health profiles, including 5 items assessing cancer beliefs.
Diverse protein import pathways into mitochondria use translocons on the outer membrane (TOM) and inner membrane (TIM). We adapted a genetic screen, based on Ura3 mistargeting from mitochondria to the cytosol, to identify small molecules that attenuated protein import. Small molecule mitochondrial import blockers of the Carla Koehler laboratory (MB)-10 inhibited import of substrates that require the TIM23 translocon.

Statin use may expand considerably given its potential for treating an array of cholesterol-independent diseases. However, the lack of conclusive evidence supporting these emerging therapeutic uses of statins brings to the fore a number of unanswered questions including uncertainties regarding patient-to-patient variability in response to statins, the most appropriate statin to be used for the desired effect, and the efficacy of statins in treating cholesterol-independent diseases.

A thoughtful, systematic reorganization of autism service delivery may reduce delays and better meet the growing need.
Methods: Two clinical centers in the Autism Intervention Research Network on Physical Health, Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC) and Nationwide Children's Hospital (NCH), undertook a year-long access improvement project to reduce delays to care by using system analysis to identify sources of delay and to target changes by using a set of defined access principles.
Biol Mood Anxiety Disord
December 2014
Background: Childhood onset of anxiety disorders is associated with greater functional impairment and burden across the lifespan. Recent work suggests that generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is characterized by dysfunctional connectivity in amygdala-based circuits at rest in adolescents, consistent with adults. However, neural mechanisms underlying a broad spectrum of often-comorbid anxiety disorders in children remains unclear and understudied.

A specific aim of the study was to describe the factors (eg, healthcare system, patient, provider, clinical encounter) that influence this experience.
Design: This qualitative descriptive study used a community-based participatory research approach.

Primary hyperoxaluria 1 (PH1; Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man no. 259900), a typically lethal biochemical disorder, may be caused by the AGT(P11LG170R) allele in which the alanine:glyoxylate aminotransferase (AGT) enzyme is mistargeted from peroxisomes to mitochondria. AGT contains a C-terminal peroxisomal targeting sequence, but mutations generate an N-terminal mitochondrial targeting sequence that directs AGT from peroxisomes to mitochondria.

A chemical screen identified small molecules that inhibit Erv1 oxidase activity, thereby facilitating dissection of the disulfide relay system in yeast and vertebrate mitochondria. One molecule, mitochondrial protein import blockers from the Carla Koehler laboratory (MitoBloCK-6), attenuated the import of Erv1 substrates into yeast mitochondria and inhibited oxidation of Tim13 and Cmc1 in in vitro reconstitution assays.

The use of blood lactate concentrations as a prognostic indicator and therapeutic gauge in feline medicine has been hindered by the inability to obtain values in a timely manner with minimal quantities of blood. Recently, hand-held point-of-care (POC) lactate meters have become commercially available. The objective of this prospective study was to determine if lactate values produced by three commercially available and one medical grade POC meter were in agreement with a laboratory blood analyzer.
