Background: From 2006 to 2014, alcohol-related visits to the emergency department (ED) increased by 76% in the United States, highlighting the need for improved ED-driven interventions addressing alcohol use disorder (AUD). Naltrexone is an FDA-approved medication for AUD shown to decrease craving and self-administration of alcohol. While oral naltrexone and extended-release naltrexone have been long utilized in primary care and inpatient hospital settings, the use of naltrexone in the ED is limited.

The authors then describe how these programs have been shaped by COVID-19 and could be reimagined to address the structural conditions that make prisons potentially life limiting for older adults and those with chronic illness.

Background: Thalassemia is a common inherited hemoglobin disorder in Southeast Asia. Severe thalassemia can lead to significant morbidity for patients and economic strain for under-resourced health systems. Thailand's thalassemia prevention and control program has successfully utilized prenatal screening and diagnosis to reduce the incidence of severe thalassemia in Thai populations, but migrant populations are excluded despite having high thalassemia prevalence.

Support groups are one way to enhance this interaction. To facilitate this process, student nurses worked with an interprofessional healthcare team, thalassemia patients, and their families to determine their support needs.
