Objective: To determine the performance measures of admission methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) nasal swabs for MRSA bacterial pneumonia in patients co-infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).
Methods: The study included patients admitted with SARS-CoV-2-positive nasopharyngeal specimens, MRSA nasal screens, and bacterial cultures to assess secondary MRSA pneumonia.
Results: 293 patients and 662 microbiological cultures evaluated.
Background: A radiological finding of a cavitary pulmonary lesion in a patient acutely infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 early during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic created a diagnostic and treatment dilemma, as invasive procedures with bronchoscopy and percutaneous needle lung biopsy posed an infection hazard to healthcare workers due to the associated risk of viral aerosolization. Available guidelines recommended delay of non-emergent procedures, but timely proceeding with those deemed urgent provided appropriate personal protective equipment and negative pressure isolation were available and exposure risk was not excessive. Thoughtful consideration by clinicians was required to avoid delay in diagnosis of a potential new malignancy and prevent unnecessary healthcare worker exposure to the virus.

Women have a tendency to underreport or present with atypical symptoms such as behavior changes, insomnia, fatigue, and depression. Nocturia, waking up from sleep 2 times or more to void, has been shown to be associated with OSA, but it is not an included symptom in commonly used screening questionnaires in primary provider offices.
