Objective: To analyze shoulder strength and function in patients presenting with possible supraspinatus pathology and to ascertain if these clinical findings are associated with severity of supraspinatus pathology on MRI.

Materials And Methods: In total, 171 patients with presumptive rotator cuff pathology and with preserved strength on standard rotator cuff examination were prospectively recruited. Patients were subjected to bilateral shoulder strength testing employing dynamometry; this included isometric strength testing at 90° of abduction, followed by eccentric assessment of isotonic strength from full abduction through the full range of motion until the arm rested at the patient's side.

Background: Osteoarthritis (OA) of the hip is a debilitating condition associated with inferior outcomes in patients undergoing hip arthroscopy. Case: A 27-year-old man with coxa profunda and a right acetabular labral tear presented for surgical re-evaluation after a postless arthroscopic labral repair was attempted at an outside institution and aborted because of inadequate distraction during portal placement. Arthroscopic labral repair with a perineal post was subsequently performed without complications.

Conclusion: Indications and limitations of postless hip distraction are seldom discussed in the literature.

A-kinase anchoring proteins (AKAPs) contain an amphipathic helix (AH) that binds the dimerization and docking (D/D) domain, RIIa, in cAMP-dependent protein kinase A (PKA). Isolation and culture of thymic epithelial cells (TECs) using conventional primary tissue culture techniques under conditions employing supplemented low calcium medium yielded an immortalized cell line derived from the LDA rat (Lewis [Rt1l] cross DA [Rt1a]) that could be manipulated in vitro. Thymi were harvested from 4-5-day-old neonates, enzymically digested using collagenase (1 mg/ml, 37 degrees C, 1 h) and cultured in low calcium WAJC404A medium containing cholera toxin (20 ng/ml), dexamethasone (10 nM), epidermal growth factor (10 ng/ml), insulin (10 mug/ml), transferrin (10 mug/ml), 2% calf serum, 2.5% Dulbecco's Modified Eagle's Medium (DMEM), and 1% antibiotic/antimycotic.

Background: Despite intensive-alkylator based regimens, >50% of patients with high-risk neuroblastoma (NB) die from recurrent disease that is probably due, in part, to acquired alkylator resistance.

Procedure: Using buthionine sulfoximine (BSO)-mediated, glutathione (GSH) depletion to modulate melphalan (L-PAM) resistance, we examined six NB cell lines established after progressive disease following either standard chemotherapy, BSO/L-PAM therapy, or myeloablative therapy and autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplant (AHSCT).

Results: Four of the six cell lines (three p53-nonfunctional and one p53-functional) showed high-level L-PAM resistance.

Our objective was to establish the existence of intercellular communication through gap junctions in synovial lining cells and in primary and passaged cultures of human synovial cells. Communication between cells was assessed using the nystatin perforated-patch method, fluorescent dye transfer, immunochemistry, transmission electron microscopy, and immunoblotting. Functional gap junctions were observed in primary and passaged cultures and were based on measurements of the transient current response to a step voltage.
