Methods: Six hundred and twenty-five consecutive patients with AF undergoing PV isolation were included. We considered that a large and/or compliant PFO was present if the catheters advanced gently into the LA without puncturing the septum.

Resting State Functional Connectivity Signatures of MRgFUS Vim Thalamotomy in Parkinson's Disease: A Preliminary Study.

Magnetic Resonance-guided high-intensity Focused Ultrasound (MRgFUS) of the thalamic ventral intermediate nucleus (Vim) for tremor has increasingly gained interest as a new non-invasive alternative to standard neurosurgery. Resting state functional connectivity (rs-FC) correlates of MRgFUS have not been extensively investigated yet. A region of interest (ROI)-to-ROI rs-FC MRI "connectomic" analysis focusing on brain regions relevant for tremor was conducted on 15 tremor-dominant patients with Parkinson's disease who underwent MRgFUS.

Effects of using an abdominal simulator to develop palpatory competencies in 3rd year medical students.

Background: Medical school faculty are hard pressed to provide clerkship students with sufficient opportunity to develop and practice their capacity to perform a competent clinical examination, including the palpatory examination of the abdomen. We evaluated the impact of training with an abdominal simulator, AbSim, designed to monitor the depth, location, and thoroughness of their palpation and to provide concurrent and summative feedback regarding their performance.

Methods: All third-year medical students were given the opportunity to develop their palpatory skills with the AbSim simulator during the family medicine rotation.

Background: The key goals of management in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) are to prolong life and improve quality of life. Micro- and macrovascular complications of T2D not only increase the risk of morbidity and mortality, but cross-sectional studies indicate they may also worsen quality of life. We prospectively examined the association of complications that developed during the follow-up with concurrent changes in quality of life.

Examining central biases in somatosensory localization: Evidence from brain-damaged individuals.

How does the brain localize touch under conditions of uncertainty caused by brain damage? By testing single cases, previous work found mislocalization of touch toward the center of the hand. We investigated whether such central bias changes as a function of uncertainty in somatosensory system. Fifty-one brain-damaged individuals were presented with a tactile detection task to establish their tactile threshold, and a tactile localization task in which they localized suprathreshold stimuli presented at different locations on the hand.

Background: The improvement of psychological treatments for depression in young adults is a pressing issue highlighted in the literature. Its relevance is determined not only because young adults are underrepresented in research, but also to prevent chronic severe mental health disorders later in life. Engagement is considered a key factor for a good therapeutic outcome, especially among young patients.

Chronic cluster headache: A study of the telencephalic and cerebellar cortical thickness.

Purpose: Previous studies on brain morphological alterations in chronic cluster headache revealed inconsistent findings.

Method: The present cross-sectional explorative study determined telencephalic and cerebellar cortex thickness alterations in a relatively wide sample of chronic cluster headache patients (n = 28) comparing them to matched healthy individuals.

Results: The combination of two highly robust state-of-the-art approaches for thickness estimation (Freesurfer, CERES), strengthened by functional characterization of the identified abnormal regions, revealed four main results: chronic cluster headache patients show 1) cortical thinning in the right middle cingulate cortex, left posterior insula, and anterior cerebellar lobe, regions involved in nociception's sensory and sensory-motor aspects and possibly in autonomic functions; 2) cortical thinning in the left anterior superior temporal sulcus and the left collateral/lingual sulcus, suggesting neuroplastic maladaptation in areas possibly involved in social cognition, which may promote psychiatric comorbidity; 3) abnormal functional connectivity among some of these identified telencephalic areas; 4) the identified telencephalic areas of cortical thinning present robust interaction, as indicated by the functional connectivity results, with the left posterior insula possibly playing a pivotal role.

Efficacy of Rac and Cdc42 Inhibitor MBQ-167 in Triple-negative Breast Cancer.

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is an aggressive form of breast cancer, with a high predisposition for locally invasive and metastatic cancer. With the objective to reduce cancer metastasis, we developed small molecule inhibitors to target the drivers of metastasis, the Rho GTPases Rac and Cdc42. Of these, MBQ-167 inhibits both Rac and Cdc42 with ICs of 103 and 78 nmol/L, respectively; and consequently, inhibits p21-activated kinase (PAK) signaling, metastatic cancer cell proliferation, migration, and mammosphere growth; induces cell-cycle arrest and apoptosis; and decreases HER2-type mammary fatpad tumor growth and metastasis (Humphries-Bickley and colleagues, 2017).
