Hydroxytyrosol was evaluated at different concentration levels (10, 50, and 100 ppm), and its antioxidant capacity was compared against that of a synthetic phenolic, propyl gallate. Results proved the efficiency of hydroxytyrosol to inhibit the formation of lipid oxidation products in all tested food systems, although two different optimal antioxidant concentrations were observed.

In order to evaluate the role of this complex in excitatory synaptic neurotransmission we specifically disrupted MUPP1-SynGAPalpha interactions in CA1 neurons of acute hippocampal slices using intracellular perfusion with peptides derived from SynGAPalpha-MUPP1 binding domains. Disruption of the interaction between MUPP1 and SynGAPalpha with two complementary peptides derived from SynGAP and MUPP1 mutual binding sites resulted in enhancement of excitatory postsynaptic currents (EPSCs).

Methods: In a multicentre controlled randomized study, participants were recruited with a clinical diagnosis of unilateral subacromial syndrome from six rehabilitation medicine departments belonging to the Public Health System in two Spanish regions. All participants received 15 sessions of physiotherapy during the 3 weeks that the treatment lasted and were randomized to additionally receive, once a week, acupuncture or mock TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation).
A procedure for the determination of volatile compounds derived from lipid oxidation of fish muscle samples is presented. Analytes are concentrated on a solid-phase microextraction fiber employed in the headspace mode (HS-SPME), and selectively determined using gas chromatography in combination with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The influence of several parameters on the efficiency of microextraction such as type of fiber, volume of sample, time, temperature, salting-out effect and stirring was systematically investigated.

During neuronal development, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which is the principal inhibitory neurotransmitter in the mature brain, exerts a paradoxical depolarizing action that plays an important role in the generation of neuronal synaptic activities in the immature cortical structures and in the formation of the neuronal network. The depolarizing action of GABA is due to a differential organization of the chloride homeostasis system; in immature neurons it maintains an elevated intracellular chloride concentration ([Cl-]i), whereas in mature neurons it keeps [Cl-]i at relatively low levels. Several recent studies have shown that the function of chloride transporters during neuronal development extends beyond the simple maintenance of chloride homeostasis and might play an active role in neuronal growth and formation of synaptic connections.

The ability of enterococci to acquire resistance to antibiotics and form biofilms in vivo makes these infections, endocarditis in particular, especially difficult to treat. A collection of clinical enterococcal isolates was screened for the presence of various virulence determinants and in an in vitro assay for biofilm formation.
