Wetlands are ecosystems that are essential to ecological balance and biodiversity; nevertheless, human activity is a constant threat to them. Excess nutrients are caused by intensive livestock and agricultural operations, pollution, and population growth, which in turn leads to uncontrolled microbiological development. This impairment in water quality can constitute a risk to animal, human, and environmental health.

Human liver subcellular fractions, including liver microsomes (HLM), liver cytosol fractions, and S9 fractions, are extensively utilized in in vitro assays to predict liver metabolism. The S9 fractions are supernatants of human liver homogenates that contain both microsomes and cytosol, which include most cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes and soluble phase II enzymes such as glucuronosyltransferases and sulfotransferases. This study reports on the direct electrochemistry and biocatalytic features of redox-active enzymes in S9 fractions for the first time.

Dibenzo[,]chrysene can be viewed as a constrained propeller-shaped tetraphenylethylene with reduced curvature and has been utilized to construct dual-pore kagome covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with tightly packed two-dimensional (2D) layers owing to its rigid and more planar structural characteristics. Here, we introduce 2D COFs based on the node 4,4',4″,4‴-(dibenzo[,]chrysene-2,7,10,15-tetraphenyl)tetraamine (DBCTPTA) featuring extended conjugation compared to the dibenzo[,]chrysene-3,6,11,14-tetraamine (DBCTA) node. We establish two exceptionally crystalline imine-linked 2D COFs with a hexagonal dual-pore kagome structure based on the DBCTPTA core.

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) offer remarkable versatility, combining ordered structures, high porosity, and tailorable functionalities in nanoscale reaction spaces. Herein, we report the synthesis of a series of isostructural, photoactive Wurster-type COFs achieved by manipulating the chemical and electronic nature of the Wurster aromatic amine building blocks. A series of donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) Wurster building block molecules was synthesized by incorporating heteroaromatic acceptors with varying strengths between triphenylamine donor groups.

Senescent cells accumulate throughout the body and brain contributing to unhealthy aging and Alzheimer's disease (AD). The APP amyloidogenic AD mouse model exhibits increased markers of senescent cells and the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP) in visceral white adipose tissue and the hippocampus before plaque accumulation and cognitive decline. We hypothesized that senolytic intervention would alleviate cellular senescence thereby improving spatial memory in APP mice.

Habitat fragmentation can negatively impact wildlife populations by simplification of ecological interactions, but little is known about how these impacts extend to host-associated symbiotic communities. The symbiotic communities of amphibians play important roles in anti-pathogen defences, particularly against the amphibian chytrid fungus (). In this study, we analyse the role of macroparasitic helminth communities in concert with microbial communities in defending the host against infection within the context of forest fragmentation.

Antimicrobial resistance has been stated to be a global health problem. In Chile, the use of antibiotics should be declared by medical prescription, but it is unknown what happens to the drugs once the treatment ends. Among the possibilities for their disposal are the trash or the drain; regardless of which scenario arises, antibiotics could accumulate in the environment, stimulating the emergence of antimicrobial resistance mechanisms and their transfer between microorganisms.

TFEB, a bHLH-leucine zipper transcription factor belonging to the MiT/TFE family, globally modulates cell metabolism by regulating autophagy and lysosomal functions. Remarkably, loss of TFEB in mice causes embryonic lethality due to severe defects in placentation associated with aberrant vascularization and resulting hypoxia. However, the molecular mechanism underlying this phenotype has remained elusive.

This article demonstrates how digital information and communication technologies (ICTs) (Zoom/WhatsApp) unexpectedly and counterintuitively proved to be valuable tools for community-engaged health research when, in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, they were integrated into a research study testing a peer support group intervention with female immigrants from Mexico. Because of pandemic restrictions, we changed the study protocol to hold meetings remotely via Zoom rather than in person as originally planned. Because we recognized that this would lack some opportunities for participants to interact and develop relationships, we created a WhatsApp chat for each group.

On-chip pump rejection filters are key building blocks in a variety of applications exploiting nonlinear phenomena, including Raman spectroscopy and photon-pair generation. Ultrahigh rejection has been achieved in the silicon technology by non-coherent cascading of modal-engineered Bragg filters. However, this concept cannot be directly applied to silicon nitride waveguides as the comparatively lower index contrast hampers the suppression of residual light propagating in the orthogonal polarization, limiting the achievable rejection.
