An orthopaedic surgeon developed dermatitis from acrylic materials. The acrylic monomer was found to penetrate surgical rubber gloves readily. Cases of "rubber glove dermatitis" with negative patch tests may have a similar explanation.

However, lesions could not be detected in cell walls recovered from the blood of normal mice after intravenous injection. Lesions were not produced by either heated or complement deficient mouse sera in any of the experiments.
