Objective: to describe updating of stratification of the Brazilian municipalities in order to evaluate health performance.

Methods: this was a descriptive and methodological study with stratification of municipalities according to population size and conditions influencing health management, using data from the intercensal period (2015) and showing classification variations compared with the census period (2010); the original data on demographic characteristics, funding capacity and population purchasing power were adjusted for the year 2015 based on a baseline study conducted with census data.

Results: some 15% of the municipalities were reclassified in the intercensal period, with the main factors of change being the conditions influencing health management.

The swimming larvae of many marine animals identify a location on the sea floor to undergo metamorphosis based on the presence of specific bacteria. Although this microbe-animal interaction is critical for the life cycles of diverse marine animals, what types of biochemical cues from bacteria that induce metamorphosis has been a mystery. Metamorphosis of larvae of the tubeworm is induced by arrays of phage tail-like contractile injection systems, which are released by the bacterium .

The achievement of varied metal alloys through the sintering of mixtures of elemental metallic powders can provide great flexibility of production of these alloys. The possibilities of controlling the composition and the resulting properties of the alloy are of great importance for metallurgy. Otherwise the alloys involving chromium offer many difficulties for their attainment through the process of powder metallurgy (PM).

Background: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is associated with high frequency of comorbidities and increased risk of polypharmacy. Although there is a great potential for complications, there is a gap in literature on polypharmacy in patients with rheumatic arthritis.

Objective: To evaluate the prevalence and factors associated with polypharmacy in a population in a real-life setting.

The size of bacterial genomes is often associated with organismal metabolic capabilities determining ecological breadth and lifestyle. The recently proposed Candidate Phyla Radiation (CPR)/Patescibacteria encompasses mostly unculturable bacterial taxa with relatively small genome sizes with potential for co-metabolism interdependencies. As yet, little is known about the ecology and evolution of CPR, particularly with respect to how they might interact with other taxa.

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate whether concomitant treatment of dutasteride and sildenafil could prevent structural changes in the penis of a BPH rodent model.

Methods: Thirty-two adult male rats were divided into the following groups: Ctrl, untreated control rats; BPH, untreated spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs); BPH + D, SHRs treated with dutasteride; and BPH + DS, SHRs treated with dutasteride and sildenafil. All treatments were performed during 40 days, following which the penises were collected for histomorphometrical analysis.

Metataxonomic approach was used to describe the bacterial community from a creosote-contaminated aquifer and to access the potential for in situ bioremediation of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) by biostimulation. In general, the wells with higher PAH contamination had lower richness and diversity than others, using the Shannon and Simpson indices. By the principal coordinate analysis (PCoA) it was possible to observe the clustering of the bacterial community of most wells in response of the presence of PAH contamination.

Background: Scientific studies have shown that the potential therapeutic efficacy of curcumin in several diseases is due to its potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Consequently, curcumin supplementation seems to be a valuable alternative for HIV-infected individuals. The aim of this study is to evaluate the influence of curcumin supplementation on substrate oxidation at rest, body composition, and the lipid profile of physically active people living with HIV/AIDS under antiretroviral therapy.

Background: The state of Rondônia (RO) is a hot spot for human cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis. Many sandfly species in RO are putative vectors of leishmaniasis.

Objectives: This study examines the diversity patterns and the presence of Leishmania DNA and blood meal sources of sandflies in RO.

Triatominae are insects notorious as vectors of , which is the etiologic agent of Chagas disease, and other trypanosomatids. Triatomines of the genus are primarily sylvatic, nevertheless the occurrence of native species that invade households suggests their possible role in the transmission of Chagas disease. was first described in 2012, but the biological aspects of this species are still unknown.

Leishmaniasis is a complex of neglected diseases caused by parasites of the genus , such as , the ethiologic agent of diffuse cutaneous leishmaniasis in Brazil. In this work, we investigated a new experimental model of infection for : the Sv129 mouse. First, we subcutaneously infected Sv129 mice with 2 × 10 or 2 × 10 parasites of the Josefa strain.

Alendronate is a bisphosphonate widely used for the treatment of osteoporosis; however, one of its main adverse reactions is gastric ulcer. Metformin is an oral antihyperglycemic agent that has several beneficial effects, including healing, gastroprotective and anti-tumoral action. This study aimed to evaluate the gastroprotective activity of metformin in alendronate-induced gastric damage in normoglycemic and hyperglycemic rats.

Inflammation is the response of the body to noxious stimuli such as infections, trauma, or injury. Experimental studies have shown that vanillic acid has anti-inflammatory effects. The objective of this study was to investigate the anti-inflammatory and antipyretic properties of the derivative of vanillic acid, isopropyl vanillate (ISP-VT), in mice.

There is a broad spectrum of proactivity in environmental management practices in companies and industries, ranging from purely reactive efforts to adhere to minimum regulatory standards to innovative projects to develop new pollution preventing technologies and risk mitigation strategies. In fact, the importance of a proactive environmental management is increasingly recognized by academics, practitioners and policy makers alike. However, proactivity is still not clearly captured by current environmental management models, which often do not include it as a core element and lack practical guidelines on how to operationalize it at firm-level.

Objective: To determine the concentration of alpha-tocopherol in umbilical cord serum of full-term and preterm newborns, in order to assess the nutritional status of both groups in relation to the vitamin and its possible correlation with intrauterine growth.

Methods: A cross-sectional observational study conducted with 140 newborns, of which 64 were preterm and 76 were full-term. They did not have any malformations, they came from healthy mothers, who were nonsmokers, and delivered a single baby.

Sulfated polysaccharides (PLS) extracted from the marine algae of the genus Gracilaria showed biological activity in different inflammatory models, except for periodontitis. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment with PLS from Gracilaria caudata in ligature-induced periodontitis. 40 animals distributed into 5 groups were used (the control group (unligated), the ligated untreated group, and the ligated groups treated with 2.

Background: ( is found throughout the northeastern region of Brazil, where it has been used in folk medicine with beneficial effects on many inflammatory disorders.

Purpose: This study investigated the phytochemical composition of the crude extract and fractions of fruit and evaluated its anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive activities and effect on cell viability .

Methods: Characterization of polyphenols present in crude extract (CE), hydroalcoholic fractions of 20-80% ethanol (CE20, CE40, CE60, and CE80), aqueous fraction (AqF), and ethyl acetate (EAF) fractions of fruit was performed by chromatographic analysis.
