We derive the probability representation of even and odd cat states of two and three qubits. These states are even and odd superpositions of spin-1/2 eigenstates corresponding to two opposite directions along the axis. The probability representation of even and odd cat states of an oscillating spin-1/2 particle is also discussed.

We propose a spatially multiplexed single-photon source where the structure of the applied binary-tree multiplexer is optimized systematically during its construction. Along the building procedure of this type of multiplexer, the position of a binary photon router appended to the tree in a step of the expansion is determined by taking into account the current achievable single-photon probability of the source. The method chooses the position where this probability is maximal.

We consider novel types of spatially multiplexed single-photon sources based on output-extended incomplete binary-tree multiplexers containing general asymmetric routers where the construction of the multiplexers takes into account the total transmission efficiencies of the multiplexer arms at which a novel router can be added to the system. After selecting the multiplexer that outperforms the others, we identify the ranges of the loss parameters for which the application of the selected multiplexer leads to single-photon sources with higher single-photon probabilities and lower multiphoton noise than that can be achieved by using asymmetric multiplexers. We show that using the selected multiplexer is especially advantageous in the case of single-mode sources characterized by thermal statistics of the input photon pairs.

We propose two novel types of spatially multiplexed single-photon sources based on incomplete binary-tree multiplexers. The incomplete multiplexers are extensions of complete binary-tree multiplexers, and they contain incomplete branches either at the input or at the output of them. We analyze and optimize these systems realized with general asymmetric routers and photon-number-resolving detectors by applying a general statistical theory introduced previously that includes all relevant loss mechanisms.

Congenital tremor in pigs involves several etiologies, including pestivirus, which may cause neurological injuries in different animal species. To evaluate whether bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV), an important pestivirus, is one of the etiological agents of congenital tremor in swine, gilts and the fetuses were challenged at 45 days of gestation with BVDV-2. A robust method for producing half-cycle-few-cycle attosecond pulses in the extreme ultraviolet spectral range is proposed. It is based on coherent undulator radiation of relativistic ultrathin electron layers (nanobunches), which are produced by nanobunching of ultrashort electron bunches by a 10-TW power laser in a modulator undulator. Our numerical calculations predict the generation of nanobunches shorter than 10 nm.

Optical field distribution in micro-nano geometries of miniaturized optical devices is often significantly different from that in identical but macroscopic geometries. Plasmon effects and near-field diffraction can enhance the local field intensity, leading to enhanced cross section for light absorption and scattering, which can be utilized in substrate-enhanced spectroscopies for the detection of trace amounts of adsorbed chemicals. A specific problem is an ingenious but only empirically described way to enhance signal intensity in Raman spectroscopy by the use of a substrate patterned with gold coated micron size pyramidal pits.

We show that a physical mechanism responsible for the enhanced transmission and reflection of ultrashort (few-cycle) pulses by a single subwavelength slit in a thick metallic film is the Fabry-Perot-like resonant excitation of stationary, quasistationary, and nonstationary waves inside the slit, which leads to the field enhancement inside and around the slit. The mechanism is universal for any pulse-scatter system, which supports the stationary resonances. We point out that there is a pulse duration limit below which the slit does not support the intraslit resonance.
