Article Synopsis
  • A study evaluated the accuracy of different serological tests (CLIA and LFIA) for detecting IgG and IgM antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 by analyzing 259 serum samples from patients and healthcare professionals.
  • The results showed a strong correlation between CLIA and both LFIA tests for IgG antibodies, but a moderate correlation for IgM, indicating that CLIA is generally more reliable.
  • Overall, the sensitivity of all tests was low for asymptomatic healthcare workers, highlighting that while IgG testing can indicate infection, the methods have limitations in detecting IgM antibodies.

COVID-19 was declared to be a pandemic due to the rapid increase of cases around the world, including the number of pregnant women. Data about vertical transmission of COVID-19 are still limited and controversial: in most cases, although a positive mother, the virus could not be isolated in amniotic fluid, cord blood, breast milk or neonatal throat swab in these patients. No data have been published about possible intrauterine sonographic signs of infection.

Immunological tests, including the QuantiFERON-TB Gold In-Tube (QFT-IT) assay, represent an important aid for diagnosing active tuberculosis (TB) and latent TB infections in children, but concerns about their use in children <5 years of age persist. This is a multicenter retrospective study comparing a population of 226 children to 521 adults with pulmonary or extrapulmonary TB. The aim was to evaluate the QFT-IT performance, analyzing both qualitative and quantitative results, according to age, birthplace, and disease localization.

AimTo evaluate real-time PCR as a diagnostic method for Legionnaires' disease (LD). Detection of DNA is among the laboratory criteria of a probable LD case, according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, although the utility and advantages, as compared to culture, are widely recognised.MethodsTwo independent laboratories, one using an in-house and the other a commercial real-time PCR assay, analysed 354 respiratory samples from 311 patients hospitalised with pneumonia between 2010-15.

Breast cancer metastases to the gastrointestinal tract are very rare occurrences. Among the histological subtypes of breast cancer, invasive lobular carcinomas have a high capacity of metastasis to uncommon sites including the stomach. Conversely, there has not been sufficient evidence supporting the gastric metastasis of invasive ductal carcinoma.

The optimal treatment for latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) in subjects exposed to multidrug-resistant (MDR) tuberculosis (TB) remains unclear, and the change in response of the QuantiFERON-TB Gold In-Tube (QTB-IT) test during and after treatment is unknown. Between May 2010 and August 2010, 39 prisoners at the 'Casa Circondariale' of Modena, Italy, were exposed to a patient with active pulmonary MDR TB. All contacts were tested with the tuberculin skin test and QTB-IT.

Background: Selecting patients according to key genetic characteristics may help to tailor chemotherapy and optimize the treatment in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Genetic variations in drug metabolism may affect the clinical response, toxicity, and prognosis of NSCLC patients treated with cisplatin/gemcitabine-based therapy.

Patients And Methods: We evaluated seven single-nucleotide polymorphisms of six genes CDA Lys27Gln (A/C); CDA C435T; ERCC1 C118T; XRCC3 Thr241Met (C/T); XPD Lys751Gln (A/C); P53 Arg72Pro (G/C), and RRM1 C524T in 192 chemotherapy-naive patients with advanced NSCLC treated with cisplatin/gemcitabine-based regimen by TaqMan probe-based assays with 7300 Real-Time PCR System, using genomic DNA extracted from blood samples.

A protein microarray containing fungal antigens (the "mycoarray") has been set up to provide rapid and appropriate serodiagnosis of primitive endemic mycoses, an important cause of morbidity and mortality in an increasingly high number of patients. The mycoarray consists of three antigen extracts (histoplasmin, coccidioidin and Coccidioides "TP") and antibody dilution curves were spotted on microarray slides. The arrays were processed with coccidioidomycosis and histoplasmosis patients sera or with control sera and the occurring immunocomplexes were detected by indirect immunofluorescence.

The detection of specific serum antibodies is mainly achieved by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Here, we describe the setting up of a microarray-based serological assay to screen for IgG and IgM against vertically transmitted pathogens (Toxoplasma gondii, rubella virus, cytomegalovirus, herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2, varicella zoster virus, Chlamydia trachomatis). The test, accommodated onto a restricted area of a microscope slide, consists of: (a) the immobilization of antigens and human IgG and IgM antibody dilution curves, laid down in an orderly manner; (b) addition of serum samples; (c) detection of antigen-serum antibodies complexes by indirect immunofluorescence.
