Article Synopsis
  • Hispanic/Latino (H/L) patients often face disparities in pain management post-tonsillectomy, with the study hypothesizing they receive inadequate opioid care compared to non-H/L patients.
  • A review of medical records from over 6,500 patients showed that H/L patients, on average, had lower pain assessment rates despite having higher BMI and lower income levels.
  • Contrary to initial expectations, the results indicated non-H/L patients received fewer opioids and had their pain assessed more effectively, highlighting the need to address the underlying causes of these disparities in perioperative pain management.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on the impact of race and insurance status on high-grade renal trauma (HGRT) among children, analyzing data from a large trauma registry between 2007 and 2020.
  • Out of 341 initially identified pediatric patients with HGRT, differences were observed in the mechanism of injury and presentation age based on race, with African American (AA) patients experiencing more penetrating trauma and younger age at presentation.
  • Insurance status affected the rates of bowel injuries and blood transfusions, and private insurance patients had higher rates of follow-up care, but neither race nor insurance status impacted overall surgical intervention outcomes, post-injury complications, or mortality rates.

Background: Intravitreal injection of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) agents is used to treat posterior type 1 retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). Recent reports indicate that anti-VEGF therapy may be associated with white matter brain injury, according to animal studies, and neurodevelopmental impairments in children born preterm. We investigated whether type 1 ROP treated with bevacizumab is associated with structural brain injury on infant term magnetic resonance images (MRIs) in very low birth weight infants compared with those treated with laser ablation.

Schiff base ligands, formed from primary amines and carbonyl compounds, are potential antioxidants because they scavenge 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radicals hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) and single electron transfer (SET) routes. This review aims to help design, synthesize, and discuss the antioxidant activity of Schiff base ligands based on their structure. This study critically discussed the solvent effect and the structural changes of Schiff base ligands responsible for DPPH scavenging activity, such as proton donating, electron-donating, and electron-withdrawing substituents, conjugation and ring structure.

Objective: Auditory brainstem response (ABR) testing is the gold standard for diagnosis of hearing loss in children who cannot complete behavioral audiometry. Testing under general anesthesia is often recommended when natural sleep ABR and/or behavioral audiometry are unsuccessful. This study aims to determine which demographic and patient factors serve as barriers to receiving this diagnostic testing.

Plastic particles have emerged as a growing threat to both ecosystems and human well-being, as they are being ingested and accumulate at different trophic levels. However, microplastic and mesoplastic contamination and its risk to coastal and marine water fish have not been well studied, particularly in the northern Bay of Bengal. In this study, the presence of small-scale plastic particles (micro- and meso-sized) in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) and muscles of six edible fish species from the northern Bay of Bengal Coast were identified and analyzed.

Introduction: Spinal anesthesia has a long history as an effective and safe technique to avoid general anesthesia in infants undergoing surgery. However, spinal anesthesia was rarely used as the primary anesthetic in this population at our institution. This healthcare improvement initiative aimed to increase the percentage of successful spinal placements as the primary anesthetic in infants undergoing circumcision, open orchidopexy, or hernia repair from 11% to 50% by December 31, 2019, and sustain that rate for 6 months.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to identify factors affecting how long it takes for pediatric patients (ages 0-18) to be decannulated after being tracheostomy-dependent.
  • It reviewed data from 479 patients, finding that 33.8% were successfully decannulated, with a median time to decannulation of 24 months.
  • Key factors influencing decannulation included bronchopulmonary dysplasia and use of Passy-Muir® Valve, while neurological issues and home ventilators delayed the process, highlighting the complexity of these patients' medical needs.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on Robin sequence (RS), which causes upper airway obstruction due to micrognathia and glossoptosis, examining long-term natural decannulation (ND) outcomes in patients who underwent tracheostomy.
  • Out of 144 RS patients treated, 36 were analyzed, revealing that 53% achieved ND at a median of 66.1 months, with higher rates noted in non-syndromic patients and earlier years (1995-2006).
  • Factors like ethnicity, birthweight, and syndromic status were found to significantly influence ND likelihood, with lower rates in patients from 2007-2020, likely due to new management techniques being used in severe cases.
