Silk is a natural fibrous polymer with application potential in regenerative medicine. Increasing interest remains for silk materials in bone tissue engineering due to their characteristics in biocompatibility, biodegradability and mechanical properties. Plenty of the in vitro and in vivo studies confirmed the advantages of silk in accelerating bone regeneration.

In this study, waste silk fabrics (SF) were modified with tea-polyphenols (TPs) and then iron (Fe). The modified silk fabrics (TP-SF/Fe) were characterized Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. TP-SF/Fe was used in the Fenton-like removal of dyes (methylene blue, reactive orange GRN, and cationic violet X-5BLN) from aqueous solutions with catalyst-like activity.

Dispersion of iron was achieved on waste silk fibers (wSF) after grafting of polydopamine (PDA). The catalytic activity of the resulting material (wSF-DA/Fe) was investigated in Fenton-like removal of toxic aromatic dyes (Methylene Blue, Cationic Violet X-5BLN, and Reactive Orange GRN) water. The dye removal yield reached 98%, 99%, and 98% in 10-40 min for Methylene Blue, Cationic Violet X-5BLN, and Reactive Orange GRN, respectively.
