Article Synopsis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is the most prevalent inflammatory polyarthritis in Bangladesh, prompting the Bangladesh Rheumatology Society (BRS) to develop management recommendations that consider local resources and societal factors.
  • A task force of rheumatologists reviewed existing literature and guidelines, formulating a set of 12 recommendations that focus on early diagnosis, disease activity monitoring, and a structured approach to treating RA using various disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs).
  • The recommendations encompass strategies for starting treatment with methotrexate, adjusting therapy based on patient needs, and emphasizing the importance of screening for infections and vaccinations, aiming to effectively address the high prevalence of RA in the country.

Article Synopsis
  • - In Bangladesh, a preventive chemotherapy program for soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections in school-age children has been in effect since 2008, aiming to reduce infection rates through targeted treatment and evaluation of its geographical spread and risk factors from 2017 to 2020.
  • - Researchers used advanced Bayesian geostatistical models to analyze STH prevalence data across various districts, taking into account multiple predictors and estimating treatment needs based on a gridded population dataset, resulting in specific antimicrobial dosage requirements for different risk groups.
  • - The study found varying prevalence rates for specific STH species and highlighted significant associations with household sanitation and environmental factors, estimating that approximately 30.5 million treatment doses are needed yearly for Bangl

Malaysia is one of the top exporters of palm oil, and although currently facing fierce resistance towards palm oil imports in some parts of the globe, one of the ways to utilize this commodity is by increasing palm biodiesel content in local commercial diesel. However, due to the oxygen-rich nature of biodiesel, its utilization suffers from increased nitrogen oxides (NO) emission compared to conventional diesel. To mitigate this issue and improve diesel engine performance and emissions using biodiesel-diesel blends, this study attempted to investigate implementation of a real-time non-surfactant emulsion fuel supply system (RTES) which produces water-in-diesel emulsion as fuel without surfactants.

Background: Solid malignant tumors are abnormal masses of tissue that usually do not contain any cysts or liquid areas. The causation of these tumors is multifactorial, and the disease process differs at different sites.

Aim: This study aims to determine the clinicopathological patterns of malignant solid tumors in adult patients admitted into the department of internal medicine of a tertiary care hospital in Bangladesh.

Rarely, post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL) may coexist with visceral leishmaniasis (VL). The concomitant PKDL and VL are referred to as Para-kala-azar dermal Leishmaniasis. We report a case of Para kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis in a chronic Hepatitis-B virus-infected patient who presented with an abdominal lump and multiple maculopapular skin lesions and is resistant to sodium stibogluconate but successfully treated with liposomal Amphotericin-B.

Background: Neuromyelitis optica is a relapsing-remitting disease characterized by a recurrent attack of optic neuritis and transverse myelitis; sometimes associated with acute brainstem syndrome. Systemic lupus erythematosus is an autoimmune multisystem disorder in which ocular involvement such as acute ischemic optic neuropathy is a rare manifestation. However, neuromyelitis optica can be associated with systemic lupus erythematosus.

Background: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection may cause severe life-threatening diseases called acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) owing to cytokine storms. The mortality rate of COVID-19-related ARDS is as high as 40% to 50%. However, effective treatment for the extensive release of acute inflammatory mediators induced by hyperactive and inappropriate immune responses is very limited.

In this report, we present a case where the patient developed a border-zone ischemic stroke with central retinal artery occlusion (RAO) following coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) disease. The COVID-19 disease has been described to induce inflammatory changes that predispose to thrombotic disease in both venous and arterial circulation. Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptor expression in the blood vessel with which severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) binds is the cornerstone of inflammation although the pathogenesis of central RAO is multifactorial.

The exponential growth of nanotechnology and the industrial production have raised concerns over its impact on human and environmental health and safety (EHS). Although there has been substantial progress in the assessment of pristine nanoparticle toxicities, their EHS impacts require greater clarification. In this review, we discuss studies that have assessed nanoparticle eco-genotoxicity in different test systems and their fate in the environment as well as the considerable confounding factors that may complicate the results.

This study proposes a community rainwater harvesting (RWH) system as an alternative water supply solution for Paikgacha, a water-scarce coastal urban area in Bangladesh. Although individual household-based RWH systems have been implemented in many areas in Bangladesh, to date, no study has been conducted designing a community RWH system and assessing its reliability and financial feasibility. This study employs historical observed and available climate model predicted future rainfall data into stormwater management model (SWMM) for rainfall-runoff simulation of the community RWH, and compares SWMM's performance with rational formula based estimation.
