Inner-city African American parental involvement in children's schooling: racial socialization and social support from the parent community.

Parents (n = 161) and teachers (n = 18) from an urban elementary school serving primarily African American children completed questionnaires regarding racial socialization, social support, and involvement in activities that support youth educational achievement at home and school. Parental reports of racism awareness, and contact with school staff were significantly correlated with parent reports of at-home involvement and at-school involvement. Parent reports of social support from the parent community were significantly related to at-home involvement only.

Driving beliefs and behaviors of novice teen drivers and their parents: implications for teen driver crash risk.

This project was a cross sectional survey of 739 matched family pairs of recently licensed teens and their parents. The role of personal contact with HIV-infected people in explaining urban, African American preadolescents' attitudes toward peers with HIV/AIDS.

This article presents the results of a study aimed at describing African American youths' attitudes toward peers with HIV/AIDS and identifying correlates of these attitudes based on the contact theory. Baseline data from a sample of African American, urban mothers and their youth (n = 197) participating in a family-based HIV prevention program were analyzed. In support of contact theory, preadolescents' close relationship to persons infected with HIV/AIDS was highly related to their attitudes.

Alternative lengthening of telomeres and survival in patients with glioblastoma multiforme.

One of the objectives of the HUman MicroNucleus (HUMN) project is to identify the methodological variables that have an important impact on micronucleus (MN) or micronucleated (MNed) cell frequencies measured in human lymphocytes using the cytokinesis-block micronucleus assay. In a previous study we had shown that the scoring criteria used were likely to be an important variable. To determine the extent of residual variation when laboratories scored cells from the same cultures using the same set of standard scoring criteria, an inter-laboratory slide-scoring exercise was performed among 34 laboratories from 21 countries with a total of 51 slide scorers involved.

The Cubital Tunnel syndrome: a case report and discussion.

Cubital Tunnel Syndrome is the second most common peripheral neuropathy of the upper extremity. It presents as elbow, forearm, or hand pain in the ulnar nerve sensory distribution and it is the result of overuse, trauma, or entrapment of the ulnar nerve at the elbow. Proper physical diagnosis can localize the site of ulnar nerve entrapment to the elbow or wrist.

Multiple-family groups for urban children with conduct difficulties and their families.

The authors present the results of two studies designed to improve treatment engagement among urban youths with conduct and oppositional behavioral difficulties. In the first study, information on attitudes about mental health treatment was obtained from 159 adult caregivers of children who were referred to an urban child mental health clinic because of disruptive behavioral difficulties. The caregivers listed insufficient time, lack of transportation, the child's not wanting to attend treatment, and the caregiver's concern that treatment might not help as barriers to service use.

The smoker's paradox: insights from the angiographic substudies of the TIMI trials.

Background: Despite increased risk for coronary artery disease and acute myocardial infarction (AMI), smokers have a paradoxically lower mortality after thrombolysis for AMI than non-smokers. We determined the clinical risk profiles and coronary flow characteristics of patients in the TIMI trials according to smoking status, focusing on microvascular flow.

Methods: Among 2,573 patients in the TIMI 4, 10A, 10B and TIMI 14 trials, epicardial flow post-thrombolysis was measured using angiographic TIMI flow grades and the corrected TIMI frame count (CTFC).

Conserved disruptions in the predicted coiled-coil domains of eukaryotic SMC complexes: implications for structure and function.

The structural maintenance of chromosome (SMC) proteins are required for a number of essential nuclear processes, including those of chromosome condensation, chromatid cohesion, and DNA repair. Eukaryotic SMC proteins form heterodimers capable of binding DNA and possess a DNA-stimulated ATPase activity. They have a characteristic structure of terminal globular domains with two internal arms that are predicted to form a coiled-coil structure interspaced with a globular "hinge" domain.

Kinetic characterization of wild-type and proton transfer-impaired variants of beta-carbonic anhydrase from Arabidopsis thaliana.

We have cloned and overexpressed a truncated, recombinant form of beta-carbonic anhydrase from Arabidopsis thaliana. The wild-type enzyme and two site-directed variants, H216N and Y212F, have been kinetically characterized both at steady state by stopped-flow spectrophotometry and at chemical equilibrium by (18)O isotope exchange methods. The wild-type enzyme has a maximal k(cat) for CO2 hydration of 320 ms(-1) and is rate limited by proton transfer involving two residues with apparent pK(a) values of 6.

Suspensions and detentions in an urban, low-income school: punishment or reward?

Disciplinary records for 3rd through 8th grade students (n = 314) in an inner-city, public school were examined for one school year to assess students' variation in response to discipline. Rates of disciplinary referrals were compared for students who received no detentions or suspensions throughout the year ("never group" n = 117), students who received one or more detention or suspension in the fall but not in the spring ("fall group" n = 62), and students who received one or more detention or suspension in the fall and one or more detention or suspension in the spring ("fall + spring group" n = 75). Results indicated that during the fall, the "fall group" had nearly equivalent rates of referrals to the "fall + spring group"; however, the "fall group" exhibited significantly lower rates of referrals during winter and spring that were nearly equivalent to the "never group," as would be expected for a punishment procedure.

Evaluating process in child and family interventions: aggression prevention as an example.

This article reports on 2 studies designed to develop and validate a set of measures for use in evaluating processes of child and family interventions. In Study 1 responses from 187 families attending an outpatient clinic for child behavior problems were factor analyzed to identify scales, consistent across sources: Alliance (Satisfactory Relationship with Interventionist and Program Satisfaction), Parenting Skill Attainment, Child Cooperation During Session, Child Prosocial Behavior, and Child Aggressive Behavior. Study 2 focused on patterns of scale scores among 78 families taking part in a 22-week preventive intervention designed to affect family relationships, parenting, and child antisocial and prosocial behaviors.

Caspase proteolysis of the cohesin component RAD21 promotes apoptosis.

Caspases are a conserved family of proteases that play a critical role in the execution of apoptosis by cleaving key cellular proteins at Asp residues and modifying their function. Using an expression cloning strategy we recently developed, we isolated human RAD21/SCC1/MCD1 as a novel caspase substrate. RAD21 is a component of the cohesin complex that holds sister chromatids together during mitosis and repairs double-strand DNA breaks.

Child safety seats: do doctors know enough?

The purpose of the study was to assess the knowledge of physicians in training about child safety seats and to test the effectiveness of a brief didactic session on improving that knowledge. Pre-post quasi experimental design was used. A 25-minute didactic session on the need for and appropriate use of child safety seats was presented.

Exacerbation, then clearance, of mutation-proven Darier's disease of the skin after radiotherapy for bronchial carcinoma: a case of radiation-induced epidermal differentiation?

We investigated a radiotherapy-induced flare and subsequent clearance of skin lesions of a patient with the rare, dominantly inherited genodermatosis, Darier's disease (DD). The DD gene, ATP2A2, was recently isolated and shown to be a cation pump responsible for regulating intracellular calcium homeostasis. A severe exacerbation of Darier's skin lesions developed within the radiation field when 40 Gy of palliative thoracic external-beam radiation therapy and concurrent chemotherapy (cisplatin and hydroxyurea) were delivered for non-small cell lung cancer.
