When the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) was published in 2013, there was a firestorm of controversy about the elimination of the bereavement exclusion. Proponents of this change and of the proposed "complicated grief" designation believed that this change would help clinicians recognise major depression in the context of recent bereavement. Other researchers and clinicians have raised concerns about medicalising grief.

  • The American Indian Enculturation Scale (AIES) was designed to assess cultural connection for American Indian populations but hadn't been tested specifically for Alaska Natives before this study.
  • In a trial involving 160 Alaska Native adults to reduce alcohol use, researchers found that a modified one-factor, 15-item version of the AIES was both reliable and valid for this group.
  • The study suggests that while the AIES may have some validity for Alaska Native adults, further research and potential adaptation of the scale are necessary to ensure it effectively meets their needs.

Internationally, consumer dissatisfaction with cow-calf separation at birth has led to increased interest in alternative calf-rearing methods, specifically cow-calf contact (CCC) systems. The objectives of this preliminary study were to estimate whether CCC could be incorporated into an Irish spring-calving, pasture-based system, and to investigate the effects on cow milk production and health. Three systems were compared: the conventional Irish system (CONV;18 cows), cow and calf were separated < 1 h postbirth, cows were pasture-based and milked twice-a-day; a full-time access system (FT;14 cows), cow and calf were allowed constant, unrestricted access, were pasture-based, and cows were milked twice-a-day; and a part-time access system (PT;18 cows), cow and calf had unrestricted access when indoors at night, cows grazed outdoors by day while calves remained indoors, and cows were milked once-a-day in the morning.

The American, European, and Latin American liver societies have proposed a change in the nomenclature we use to describe alcohol-related liver disease and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Additionally, a term encompassing both is now advocated: steatotic liver disease, which includes metabolic dysfunction associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and MASLD with greater alcohol consumption (MetALD). These classifications offer increased relevance for clinicians, researchers, and patients alike.

-Nitroaniline (ONA) is a model for the insensitive high explosive 1,3,5-triamino-2,4,6-trinitrobenzene (TATB) that shares strong hydrogen bonding character between adjacent nitro and amino groups. This work reports femtosecond time-resolved mass spectrometry (FTRMS) measurements and theoretical calculations that explain the high stability of the ONA cation compared with related nitroaromatic molecules. Ab initio calculations found that the lowest-lying electronic excited state of the ONA cation, D, lies more than 2 eV above the ground state, and the energetic barriers to rearrangement and dissociation reactions exceed this D energy.
