Background: The severity of the alcohol hangover may be related to inflammation induced by impurities in the alcohol beverage and byproducts of alcohol metabolism. An extract of the Opuntia ficus indica (OFI) plant diminishes the inflammatory response to stressful stimuli.

Methods: In this double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover trial, 64 healthy, young adult volunteers were randomly assigned to receive OFI (1600 IU) and identical placebo, given 5 hours before alcohol consumption.

The replication in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) of unique HIV-1 that select tRNA(His) or tRNA(Lys1,2) for reverse transcription was compared to the wild-type virus that uses tRNA(Lys,3). HIV-1 with only the primer-binding site (PBS) changed to be complementary to these alternative tRNAs initially replicated more slowly than the wild-type virus in PBMC, although all viruses eventually reached equivalent growth as measured by p24 antigen. Viruses with only a PBS complementary to the 3' terminal 18 nucleotides of tRNA(His) or tRNA(Lys1,2) reverted to use tRNA(Lys3).

Although several observations show local T cell recognition of retinal Ag, there has been no direct demonstration that the APC were retinal derived, rather than recruited. In this study, CD45(+) cells isolated from immunologically quiescent murine retina were tested in vitro for functional evidence of Ag presentation to naive and Ag-experienced CD4 T cells specific for beta-galactosidase. Because CD45(+) cells from brain have been reported to be efficient APC, they were included for comparison.

Relational integration and executive function in Alzheimer's disease.

Executive functions depend on the ability to represent relations between objects and events, and the prefrontal cortex provides the neural substrate for this capacity. Patients with probable Alzheimer's disease (AD) and control participants were administered measures of working memory and reasoning that varied systematically in their relational complexity. AD patients showed impairment on reasoning measures that required the online integration of relations but performed as well as control participants on nonrelational items and items requiring the processing of only single relations.

A 13-week oral toxicity study of senna in the rat with an 8-week recovery period.

Senna was administered by gavage to Sprague Dawley rats once daily at dose levels of 0, 100, 300, 750 or 1500 mg/kg for up to 13 consecutive weeks followed by an 8-week recovery period for selected animals. Dose- and treatment-related clinical signs included abnormal feces, which were seen to varying degrees from animals at 300 mg/kg per day and more. Animals receiving 750 or 1500 mg/kg per day had significantly reduced body weight gain (males only) and, related to the laxative properties of senna, increased water consumption and notable changes in electrolytes in both serum and urine.

Although the expression of class II major histocompatibility complex (MHC) in retina is extremely low, it is an established fact that activated CD4 T cells, specific for retinal antigens (Ags), mediate experimental autoimmune uveoretinitis (EAU). Conversely, CD8 T cells have not been shown to recognize Ag in the retina. This study investigated whether retinal-specific Ags are detected by class I MHC-restricted CD8 T cells.

Effect of two different videotaped instructional models on motor and verbal behaviors of adults' lifting: a pilot study.

This study examined two different videotaped instructional models on subsequent motor and verbal behaviors of adults (N=9) learning how to lift properly. The correct model group viewed a narrated videotape of a skilled individual demonstrating lifting; the learning model group viewed a videotape of an unskilled individual being taught lifting by an instructor, and the controls received no intervention. Adults lifted from floor to waist a plastic crate during 15 acquisition and 3 retention trials and lowered the crate from waist to floor during 3 transfer trials.

Effectiveness of hydroplasty and therapeutic exercise for treatment of frozen shoulder.

The purpose of this retrospective review was to evaluate the effectiveness of a hydraulic distention technique (hydroplasty) combined with a therapy program for treatment of idiopathic frozen shoulder. Over a two-year period, 60 patients with idiopathic frozen shoulder were identified as having undergone the hydroplasty procedure and therapy protocol at the authors' hand center. Distention of the glenohumeral joint was achieved by an injection of a 10-mL combination of bupivacaine (Marcaine), lidocaine (Xylocaine), and corticosteroid followed by injection of 30 mL of chilled sterile normal saline.

Vaccines that stimulate both cellular and humoral immunity will probably be needed to control many infectious diseases. Previously, our laboratory generated a vaccine vector that uses poliovirus genomes (replicons) in which the capsid genes have been replaced by foreign proteins. In the current study, we have evaluated the immune responses induced by immunization using poliovirus replicons encoding green fluorescent protein (GFP).

Community-acquired pneumonia in the emergency department: a practical approach to diagnosis and management.

Pneumonia is one of the most common conditions for which patients seek emergency care. It is a challenging infection in that the spectrum of illness ranges from the nontoxic patient appropriate for outpatient antibiotics to the critically ill patient requiring intensive care hospitalization. Current data and diagnostic technology provide the emergency physician with the tools for an appropriately rapid evaluation and consideration of the differential diagnosis.

Oestrogens and prostate cancer.

Androgens are essential for stimulating normal development, growth and secretory activities of the prostate whereas oestrogens are generally regarded as inhibitors of growth. Evidence for the local synthesis of oestrogens includes the detection of aromatase mRNA and protein in the stroma of human non-malignant tissues and in malignant tissue, where it is detected in epithelial tumour cells. As well, aromatase activity was measured by biochemical assay and protein was detected in prostatic non-malignant and tumour cell lines.

This study investigated whether dietary isoflavones inhibit prostate growth in vivo in the aromatase knock-out (ArKO) mouse that exhibits lifelong elevation of androgens leading to prostate enlargement.

Methods: Adult (11-week-old) wild-type (WT) and ArKO mice were fed on protein matched isoflavones free (IF) and RC (isoflavone rich) diets for 28 days.

Objective: This report provides a description of the prevalence and clinical features of the major depressive syndrome of Alzheimer's disease using data derived from structured diagnostic assessments of 243 patients with probable Alzheimer's disease and 151 nondemented elderly comparison subjects.

Method: Subjects were characterized by a consortium of four Alzheimer's disease research centers and the Geriatric Psychiatry Branch of the National Institute of Mental Health. Epidemiological evidence suggests a geographical basis for the incidence of prostate cancer and dietary factors, including isoflavone consumption, may be linked to this phenomenon. This paper reports a nonrandomized, nonblinded trial with historically matched controls from archival tissue designed to determine the effects of acute exposure to a dietary supplement of isoflavones in men with clinically significant prostate cancer before radical prostatectomy. Venous covered stent: successful occlusion of a symptomatic internal iliac arteriovenous fistula.

We report the placement of a covered stent within the internal iliac vein (IIV) to occlude a symptomatic iatrogenic internal iliac arteriovenous fistula following an abdominal aortic graft. Angiography revealed a direct communication between an internal iliac graft to artery anastomosis and the right IIV with rapid shunting into the inferior vena cava and a small associated pseudoaneurysm. Femoral, brachial or axillary arterial access was precluded.

Role of nitric-oxide synthase, free radicals, and protein kinase C delta in opioid-induced cardioprotection.

Opioids generate free radicals that mediate protection in isolated cultured cardiomyocytes. We hypothesize that the nature of these radicals is nitric oxide, and that nitric oxide activates the protein kinase C (PKC) delta isoform. Through this signal transduction pathway, opiates protect cardiomyocytes during hypoxia and reoxygenation.

Prostate phenotypes in estrogen-modulated transgenic mice.

Estrogen-modulated transgenic mice, such as estrogen receptor-knockouts (alphaERKO and betaERKO), aromatase-knockout (ArKO) and aromatase-overexpressing (AROM+) mice, have contributed to our understanding of the roles of estrogens in male reproductive biology, including prostate growth and development. Varying pathological changes of the prostate have been described as being the result of aberrant actions of estrogen, both directly through the estrogen receptors or indirectly by altering the endocrine status of these mice. This article identifies the consequences of aberrant estrogen signaling on prostate growth and development.

Apathy and executive function in Alzheimer's disease.

Apathy is a common behavioral disturbance in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Recent studies have linked the presence of apathy to alterations in frontal lobe functions, but few studies have explored the relationship using standard neuropsychological measures in patients with AD. We administered a comprehensive battery of neuropsychological tests and a behavior rating scale to 80 patients with AD.
