Active recall, the act of recalling knowledge from memory, and games-based learning, the use of games and game elements for learning, are well-established as effective strategies for learning gross anatomy. An activity that applies both principles is Catch-Phrase, a fast-paced word guessing game. In Anatomy Catch-Phrase, players must get their teammates to identify an anatomical term by describing its features, functions, or relationships without saying the term itself.

Exclusively found in people of recent African (AFR) ancestry, risk variants in Apolipoprotein L1 (APOL1) termed G1 and G2 contribute significantly to this increased susceptibility. Our group and others showed that a missense variant in APOL1, rs73885316 (p.

Methods: Patients and clinicians at a tertiary care centre participated in qualitative interviews on usability, acceptability, feasibility, efficiency/effectiveness, impact of device on behaviour/clinical practice and preferences/barriers. Interviews were audiotaped, transcribed and coded using a constant comparison method for category themes.
Introduction: Perspectives on long-acting injectable cabotegravir/rilpivirine (CAB/RPV-LA) from HIV health disparity populations are under-represented in current literature yet crucial to optimize delivery.
Methods: Between August 2022 and May 2023, we conducted in-depth interviews with people with HIV (PWH) at four HIV clinics in Atlanta, Chicago and San Francisco. Eligibility criteria were current CAB/RPV-LA use with receipt of ≥3 injections or CAB/RPV-LA discontinuation.
Introduction: While musculoskeletal disorders are leading causes of medical visits, musculoskeletal education is underrepresented in US medical curricula. Previous studies have demonstrated that undergraduate medical students often fail to demonstrate competency surrounding musculoskeletal disorders. More educational content is needed to support musculoskeletal knowledge in learners.

These technologies not only offer critical green space and food agency to astronauts but also promise to minimize mass and volume requirements through scalable, modular agriculture within closed-loop systems, offering an advantage over traditional bring-along strategies. Despite these benefits, the prevalent model for evaluating such systems exhibits significant limitations.

With dissection-based gross anatomy, instructors dynamically use their metacognition to monitor student learning and adapt their teaching at tableside. This study explored the metacognition of instructors as they taught in an anatomy course for allied health students.

As the world's population continues to grow and is projected to reach 9 billion people by 2050, there is a growing need for alternative protein sources that can meet nutritional demands while minimizing environmental impact. Plant expression of animal proteins is a cutting-edge biotechnology approach that allows crops to produce proteins traditionally derived from animals, offering a sustainable and resource-efficient manner of producing these proteins that diversifies protein production and increases food security.

We sought to understand practice patterns and opportunities for prescribing PrEP across two large, urban, academic healthcare institutions in Chicago, Illinois.
Methods: We analyzed electronic medical record data from two institutions including encounters for persons ≥18 years of age with ≥1 negative HIV test between 1/1/2015-12/31/2021 who had indications for PrEP.
Background: Bisphosphonates are widely used in equine athletes to reduce lameness associated with skeletal disorders. Widespread off-label use has led to concern regarding potential negative effects on bone healing, but little evidence exists to support or refute this.
Objectives: To investigate the influence of clinically relevant doses of tiludronate on bone remodelling and bone healing.
Background: Current guidelines recommend concurrent screening for HIV and syphilis with gonorrhea and chlamydia testing. Despite this, many patients are still not screened. This study describes trends in demographics and encounter locations associated with missed opportunities for HIV and syphilis screening among patients tested for gonorrhea or chlamydia.

Methods: To facilitate LAI antiretroviral therapy (ART) scale-up, we evaluated patient interest in alternative administration approaches via a mixed-methods, serial cross-sectional study across 3 US HIV clinics. We surveyed PWH (December 2021 to May 2022) on appeal of self- or partner/friend/family-administered LAI-CAB/RPV; multivariable ordinal logistic regression explored associated characteristics.
Introduction: Medical students are frequently introduced to medical school curricula through anatomy coursework, which often includes histology and embryology content. As medical education has increasingly emphasized integration of content areas, use of activities such as case-based learning (CBL) sessions has grown. Little published work has demonstrated the effectiveness of CBL sessions in integrating anatomy, embryology, and histology on first-year medical students' ability to improve content mastery and adapt their study techniques.

Healthy Choices for People With Type 2 Diabetes" (WCIE) diabetes nutrition education program was culturally adapted for AI/AN adults.
Objective: This analysis was designed to evaluate the reliability and validity of items developed to measure diabetes nutrition self-efficacy (ie, confidence one can engage in specific behaviors) and diabetes nutrition behavior among participants in the WCIE program for AI/AN adults.
Understanding the acceptability of long-acting injectable antiretroviral therapy (LAI-ART) among people with HIV (PWH), especially priority populations, is essential for effective implementation. We conducted semi-structured interviews with patients in three Ryan White-funded HIV clinics in San Francisco, Chicago, and Atlanta. We employed maximal variation sampling across age, gender, race, ethnicity, and time living with HIV and oversampled for individuals with suboptimal clinical engagement.

We previously discovered that variants in , encoding nitric oxide synthase 1 (NOS1) adaptor protein, cause monogenic nephrotic syndrome (NS). Here, we determined that an intergenic splice product of N / and neighboring , which precludes NOS1 binding, is the predominant isoform in mammalian kidney transcriptional and proteomic data.

Limited guidance exists on implementation strategies for this population.
Setting: Ward 86, a clinic serving publicly insured PWH in San Francisco.
In some mammals, notably humans, recombination occurs almost exclusively where the protein PRDM9 binds, whereas in vertebrates lacking an intact , such as birds and canids, recombination rates are elevated near promoter-like features. To determine whether PRDM9 directs recombination in nonmammalian vertebrates, we focused on an exemplar species with a single, intact ortholog, the corn snake (). Analyzing historical recombination rates along the genome and crossovers in pedigrees, we found evidence that PRDM9 specifies the location of recombination events, but we also detected a separable effect of promoter-like features.

In this review, we address updates about the evidence on doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis (doxy-PEP) for prevention of bacterial STIs, including efficacy, safety, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), acceptability, modeling population impact, and evolving guidelines for use. Equitable implementation of doxy-PEP will require evaluation of who is offered and initiates it, understanding patterns of use and longer-term STI incidence and AMR, provider training, and tailored community education.

Methods: This is a retrospective review of all ED encounters at a large, urban emergency departments with an existing HIV screening program for seven months before (November 1, 2018, to May 30, 2019) and after (June 1 to December 31, 2019) the implementation of a best practice advisory prompting universal HIV and syphilis screening.
Results: The study included 14,767 unique encounters, with 3,982 pre-implementation encounters and 10,785 post-implementation.
