The theme of limited resources pervades the mental health landscape. Practitioners often lack adequate resources to provide interventions for all who could benefit from them, and potential beneficiaries often lack adequate cognitive, financial, and temporal resources to make use of them. Even under rare conditions of bounty, many intensive interventions show small, fleeting effects.

Introduction: It is important to incorporate the patient perspective into healthcare education, as we know that patients are experts in their own conditions. The expertise gained through lived experience serves to complement the theoretical knowledge that healthcare educators can provide. This scoping review aims to explore patient involvement in medical education within obstetrics and gynaecology, a specialty that can provide unique challenges and complexities to patient involvement due to its potentially highly sensitive and intimate nature.

Article Synopsis
  • This study addresses the inconsistency in cost reporting for cost-effectiveness analysis in radiology by comparing hospital charge records with actual diagnostic imaging costs at a Singapore hospital.
  • A detailed bottom-up micro-costing method was used to analyze imaging costs, focusing on data from 96 emergency department patients who received various imaging procedures.
  • Findings revealed that actual imaging costs differ from patient charges, with conventional radiography being slightly higher than subsidized patient charges and CT procedures showing larger discrepancies, especially dependent on whether the patient was under a private or subsidized plan.

Background: Advanced imaging techniques play a pivotal role in oncology. A large variety of computed tomography (CT) scanners, scan protocols, and acquisition techniques have led to a wide range in image quality and radiation exposure. This study aims at implementing verifiable oncological imaging by quality assurance and optimization (i-Violin) through harmonizing image quality and radiation dose across Europe.

Introduction: Radiography Service Managers (RSMs) and Clinical Specialist Radiographers (CSRs) play a pivotal role in the overall provision and seamless operation of the diagnostic imaging services provided to patients. The essential role played by these professionals makes it important to consider both job satisfaction and career plans amongst this cohort as both these variables are inextricably linked with the quality of care provided to patients and the occupational performance of staff. This study explored the job satisfaction and career plans of RSMs and CSRs.

Article Synopsis
  • Ventricular shunts are the primary treatment for adult hydrocephalus, but diagnosing shunt malfunctions can be tricky; computer vision algorithms might help automate this process.
  • A feasibility study involved 191 adult hydrocephalus patients and their CT scans, where a machine learning algorithm was trained to identify brain ventricle sizes.
  • The algorithm showed a high performance (average Dice score of 0.809) and accurately predicted shunt revisions in 92.3% of cases, indicating its potential reliability in clinical settings.

Article Synopsis
  • Healthy ageing is important for older people and can be helped by how society supports them, but this support can sometimes be lacking.
  • The TILDA project studies how to promote healthy ageing and finds out what older people and their support groups think about its efforts.
  • Interviews with 15 organizations showed some limitations of TILDA, like not being inclusive enough, but also highlighted its benefits, like providing useful information to help plan for the needs of older people in the future.

SETANTA (Study of HEarT DiseAse and ImmuNiTy After COVID-19 in Ireland) study aimed to investigate symptom burden and incidence of cardiac abnormalities after severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)/COVID-19 and to correlate these results with biomarkers of immunological response and coagulation. SETANTA was a prospective, single-arm observational cross-sectional study condcuted in a primary practice setting, and prospectively registered with ClinicalTrials.gov (identifier: NCT04823182).

Dose management systems (DMS) are an essential tool for quality assurance and optimising patient radiation exposure. For radiologists and medical physicists, they are important for managing many radiation protection tasks. In addition, they help fulfil the requirements of Directive 2013/59/EURATOM regarding the electronic transmission of dosimetric data and the detection of unintended patient exposures.

Article Synopsis
  • * A total of 31 relevant studies were analyzed, which highlighted the effectiveness of American College of Radiology guidelines in reducing patient radiation exposure and wait times, while also decreasing unnecessary imaging and saving costs.
  • * The conclusion emphasized that implementing evidence-based imaging referral guidelines enhances healthcare quality and efficiency, and there is a need for widespread adoption among healthcare providers globally.

Introduction: The SAFE EUROPE project, a European-funded project, addressed educational gaps of Therapeutic Radiographers/Radiation Therapists (TR/RTTs) by offering a series of free webinars. This study aimed to assess the quality of these webinars and their impact on professional practice.

Methods: Data collection involved two methods: an automated feedback form administered after each webinar, supplemented by a survey disseminated through social media.

Article Synopsis
  • The genus Vincetoxicum comprises invasive vines in North America that disrupt ecosystems and complicate land management efforts, primarily due to their production of harmful alkaloids.
  • Research using advanced metabolomics techniques identified 25 different alkaloids in Vincetoxicum species, helping to establish a biosynthetic pathway that explains their diversity and potential invasiveness.
  • Phytotoxic effects of these alkaloids on other plant seedlings were noted, alongside their accumulation in both soil and on damaged leaves, suggesting these compounds play a significant role in ecological interactions and could inform management strategies for controlling these invasive plants.

Background: Traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage (tSAH) is a common consequence of head trauma. Treatment of patients with tSAH commonly involves serial computed tomography (CT) scans to assess for expansile hemorrhage. However, growing evidence suggests that these patients rarely deteriorate or require neurosurgical intervention.

Established in 2006, the Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (TILDA) investigates the health, economic and social circumstances of a nationally-representative sample of people aged fifty years and older in a series of biennial data collection waves. Irish newspapers have been reporting the results of TILDA for over a decade and a half, and their texts represent reports of scientific research distilled through the pen of journalists. In their totality, their texts constitute a public discourse on ageing and health.

Background: Autistic individuals encounter numerous barriers in accessing healthcare, including communication difficulties, sensory sensitivities, and a lack of appropriate adjustments. These issues are particularly acute during MRI scans, which involve confined spaces, loud noises, and the necessity to remain still. There remains no unified approach to preparing autistic individuals for MRI procedures.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has transitioned from the lab to the bedside, and it is increasingly being used in healthcare. Radiology and Radiography are on the frontline of AI implementation, because of the use of big data for medical imaging and diagnosis for different patient groups. Safe and effective AI implementation requires that responsible and ethical practices are upheld by all key stakeholders, that there is harmonious collaboration between different professional groups, and customised educational provisions for all involved.

Comparisons of transgender and gender diverse (TGD) individuals' mental health functioning with that of cisgender individuals rely almost exclusively on screening measures. The limited research with TGD individuals and omnibus assessment measures has primarily used previous iterations of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventories (MMPIs). This study sought to examine the psychometric functioning of the MMPI-3 with a TGD community sample ( = 97) and compare mean scores across TGD and cisgender subsamples.

Background: Autistic individuals might undergo a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examination for clinical concerns or research. Increased sensory stimulation, lack of appropriate environmental adjustments, or lack of streamlined communication in the MRI suite may pose challenges to autistic patients and render MRI scans inaccessible. This study aimed at (i) exploring the MRI scan experiences of autistic adults in the United Kingdom; (ii) identifying barriers and enablers toward successful and safe MRI examinations; (iii) assessing autistic individuals' satisfaction with MRI service; and (iv) informing future recommendations for practice improvement.
