Background: Impaired pulmonary function carries significant risks for lung, cardiovascular, and metabolic disorders.
Research Question: Can circulating protein biomarkers of pulmonary function provide insight into the pathophysiologic features of lung function impairment and links to comorbidities?.
Study Design And Methods: We analyzed plasma levels of 2,922 proteins in 32,493 UK Biobank participants (53% female; mean [SD] age, 57 [8] years) to investigate their associations with spirometry measures of lung function (FEV, FVC, FEV to FVC ratio), and with obstructive (n = 4,713) and restrictive (n = 3,886) spirometry patterns.

Global ground-level measurements of elements in ambient particulate matter (PM) can provide valuable information to understand the distribution of dust and trace elements, assess health impacts, and investigate emission sources. We use X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy to characterize the elemental composition of PM samples collected from 27 globally distributed sites in the Surface PARTiculate mAtter Network (SPARTAN) over 2019-2023. Consistent protocols are applied to collect all samples and analyze them at one central laboratory, which facilitates comparison across different sites.

Micro- and nanoscopic particles that swim autonomously and self-assemble under the influence of chemical fuels and external fields show promise for realizing systems capable of carrying out large-scale, predetermined tasks. Different behaviors can be realized by tuning swimmer interactions at the individual level in a manner analogous to the emergent collective behavior of bacteria and mammalian cells. Solution-state photophysical properties in both aqueous and organic solutions were collected for these derivatives. Additionally, CCK-8 cell viability assays and fluorescent imaging in HeLa cells incubated with the new heterocyclic derivatives show evidence of favorable cell permeability, cell viability, and moderate intracellular localization when appended with the well-known morpholine targeting motif.

We sought to examine the association of obesity-related biomarkers including adipokines (leptin, resistin, adiponectin), inflammatory markers (CRP [C-reactive protein], IL-6 [interleukin-6]), and insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) with HFpEF status, exercise capacity, and cardiovascular outcomes.
Methods: We studied 509 consecutive patients with left ventricular ejection fraction ≥50% and chronic dyspnea, who underwent clinically indicated cardiopulmonary exercise test with invasive hemodynamic monitoring between 2006 and 2017.
Introduction: The classification and management of pulmonary hypertension (PH) is challenging due to clinical heterogeneity of patients. We sought to identify distinct multimorbid phenogroups of patients with PH that are at particularly high-risk for adverse events.
Methods: A hospital-based cohort of patients referred for right heart catheterization between 2005-2016 with PH were included.

This mixed-methods study examined online incivility among faculty and students at two schools of nursing using a quantitative survey instrument with several open-ended questions addressing the impact of the pandemic. Survey results suggested that faculty ( n = 23) and students ( n = 74) experienced a low frequency of online incivility that remained potentially disruptive.

We now report the synthesis and analysis of several pyridine-containing phosphaquinolinone species exhibiting notable linear conjugation from the aryl-substituent to electron-withdrawing pyridyl nitrogen. Varying the nature of the aryl substituent from electron-withdrawing to electron-donating leads to the generation of an internal charge-transfer (ICT) band in the absorbance spectrum, which becomes the dominant absorbance in terms of intensity in the most electron-rich -NMe example.

There is evidence that attending performing arts activities, such as singing, dancing, and listening to music, may improve maternal mental health with potential for an effect on postnatal depression.
Methods: A systematic review will be conducted to assess the effect of mother-infant group music classes on postnatal depression compared to standard care, no control or wait list control.

Self-powered, biocompatible pumps in the nanometer to micron length scale have the potential to enable technology in several fields, including chemical analysis and medical diagnostics. Chemically powered, catalytic micropumps have been developed but are not able to function well in biocompatible environments due to their intolerance of salt solutions and the use of toxic fuels. In contrast, enzymatically powered catalytic pumps offer good biocompatibility, selectivity, and scalability, but their performance at length scales below a few millimeters, which is important to many of their possible applications, has not been well tested.
