Combining the N Gas Flux Method and NO Isotopocule Data for the Determination of Soil Microbial NO Sources.

Rationale: The analysis of natural abundance isotopes in biogenic NO molecules provides valuable insights into the nature of their precursors and their role in biogeochemical cycles. However, current methodologies (for example, the isotopocule map approach) face limitations, as they only enable the estimation of combined contributions from multiple processes at once rather than discriminating individual sources. This study aimed to overcome this challenge by developing a novel methodology for the partitioning of NO sources in soil, combining natural abundance isotopes and the use of a N tracer (N Gas Flux method) in parallel incubations.

Distinct transcriptional changes distinguish efficient and poor remyelination in multiple sclerosis.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a highly heterogeneous disease with varying remyelination potential across individuals and between lesions. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the potential to remyelinate remain poorly understood. In this study, we aimed to take advantage of the intrinsic heterogeneity in remyelinating capacity between MS donors and lesions to uncover known and novel pro-remyelinating molecules for MS therapies.

Rebuilding the autoimmune-damaged corneal stroma through topical lubrication.

Corneal lubrication is the most common treatment for relieving the signs and symptoms of dry eye and is considered to be largely palliative with no regenerative functions. Here we challenge this notion by demonstrating that wetting the desiccated cornea of an aqueous-deficient mouse model with the simplest form of lubrication, a saline-based solution, is sufficient to rescue the severely disrupted collagen-rich architecture of the stroma, the largest corneal compartment that is essential to transparency and vision. At the single cell level we show that stromal keratocytes responsible for maintaining stromal integrity are converted from an inflammatory state into unique reparative cell states by lubrication alone, thus revealing the extensive plasticity of these cells and the regenerative function of lubricating the surface.

Age and Surgical Volume Impact Likelihood and Technique of Lateral Extra-Articular Augmentation During Primary Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction.

Purpose: To evaluate the current utilization trends of practicing surgeons performing and lateral extra-articular augmentation (LEA) at the time of primary anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR).

Methods: The survey was distributed via e-mail in August 2023 to members of the Arthroscopy Association of North America who identified as knee surgeons and was available online on the Arthroscopy Association of North America website from January to September 2023. The 18-question survey was designed regarding surgeons' surgical utilization patterns of LEA during ACLR.

Microbial and mineral interactions decouple litter quality from soil organic matter formation.

Current understanding of soil carbon dynamics suggests that plant litter quality and soil mineralogy control the formation of mineral-associated soil organic carbon (SOC). Due to more efficient microbial anabolism, high-quality litter may produce more microbial residues for stabilisation on mineral surfaces. To test these fundamental concepts, we manipulate soil mineralogy using pristine minerals, characterise microbial communities and use stable isotopes to measure decomposition of low- and high-quality litter and mineral stabilisation of litter-C.

Emphasizing the Importance of Naproxen Prophylaxis May Decrease the Rate of Heterotopic Ossification After Hip Arthroscopy.

Purpose: To investigate the incidence of heterotopic ossification (HO) in patients prescribed prophylactic nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), both before and after the introduction of a standardized education protocol.

Methods: A retrospective review was conducted using a database of hip arthroscopy patients treated by a single surgeon at an academic hospital from 2015 to 2023. The inclusion criteria were (1) primary hip arthroscopy for the treatment of femoroacetabular impingement, (2) completion of a 2-week course of prophylactic postoperative NSAIDs (500 mg of naproxen twice daily), and (3) availability of follow-up radiographs at the 6-month postoperative visit.

Predictors of surgical intervention in first episode primary spontaneous pneumothorax requiring chest drain insertion.

Background: Primary spontaneous pneumothorax occurs in patients with no underlying lung disease and guidelines recommend chest tube drainage for the first episode, with surgical intervention reserved for recurrent episodes, persistent air leak or failure of lung re-expansion. Modern surgical management is associated with reduced length of hospital stay and superior freedom from recurrence compared with chest tube drainage alone. The objective of this study was to identify risk factors for failed chest tube drainage in patients who present with first episode primary spontaneous pneumothorax.

Reflective imaging of myelin integrity in the human and mouse central nervous systems.

The structural integrity of myelin sheaths in the central nervous system (CNS) is crucial for the maintenance of its function. Electron microscopy (EM) is the gold standard for visualizing individual myelin sheaths. However, the tissue processing involved can induce artifacts such as shearing of myelin, which can be difficult to distinguish from true myelin abnormalities.

Although it has been shown that wetland and some upland trees can emit soil-derived methane at the stem base, it has also been suggested that upland trees can serve as a net sink for atmospheric methane. Perennial bioenergy crops are a key tool in decarbonizing global energy systems, but to ensure the efficient use of land resources, it is essential that yields and crop longevity are maximized. Remedial shallow surface tillage is being explored in commercial Miscanthus plantations as an approach to reinvigorate older crops and to rectify poor establishment, improving yields. There are posited links, however, between tillage and losses in soil carbon (C) via increased ecosystem C fluxes to the atmosphere.

A controlled evaluation of social prescribing on loneliness for adults in Queensland: 8-week outcomes.

Introduction: There have been few controlled evaluations of Social Prescribing (SP), in which link workers support lonely individuals to engage with community-based social activities. This study reports early outcomes of a trial comparing General Practitioner treatment-as-usual (TAU) with TAU combined with Social Prescribing (SP) in adults experiencing loneliness in Queensland.

Methods: Participants were 114 individuals who were non-randomly assigned to one of two conditions (SP,  = 63; TAU,  = 51) and assessed at baseline and 8 weeks, on primary outcomes (loneliness, well-being, health service use in past 2 months) and secondary outcomes (social anxiety, psychological distress, social trust).

Isolated Ocular Relapse of Acute Myeloid Leukaemia Post Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplant.

We present a rare case of a 39-year-old female with extramedullary relapse of acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) isolated to the left eye 2 months post allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplant. She initially presented with painless left eye erythema, swelling, and visual impairment. Initial ophthalmology review revealed conjunctival chemosis, raised intraocular pressure, and serous retinal detachments.

Epilepsy surgery in children with genetic etiologies: A prospective evaluation of current practices and outcomes.

Objective: This study assesses current practices and outcomes of epilepsy surgery in children with a genetic etiology. It explores the pre-surgical workup, types of surgeries, and post-surgical outcomes in a broad array of disorders.

Methods: Patients ≤18 years who completed epilepsy surgery and had a known genetic etiology prior to surgical intervention were extrapolated from the Pediatric Epilepsy Research Consortium (PERC) surgery database, across 18 US centers.

A multi-center comparison of surgical techniques for corpus Callosotomy in pediatric drug-resistant epilepsy.

Objectives: Corpus callosotomy (CC) is used to reduce seizures, primarily in patients with generalized drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE). The invasive nature of the procedure contributes to underutilization despite its potential superiority to other palliative procedures. Neuroimaging findings in adolescent gaming disorder: a systematic review.
