A man in his early 40s presented with extensive skin lesions in the groin and genital regions. The lesions were erythematous and maculopapular but evolved into vesicles and pustules with surrounding cellulitis. He stated that he grips livestock between his legs for sheep shearing.

Insights into proton pump inhibitor-induced photosensitivity: An observational study in a tertiary photobiology service.

Background: Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are extensively prescribed but may cause photosensitivity and drug-induced lupus erythematosus (DILE), which can be overlooked as the drug may have been taken for years prior to presentation.

Methods: We reviewed the clinical and investigation findings of patients diagnosed with PPI-induced photosensitivity, diagnosed through the Scottish Photobiology Service.

Results: We report 11 patients with median age of onset 61-years and mean duration of PPI ingestion of 5-years [DILE ( = 6), phototoxicity ( = 3) and drug-induced solar urticaria through a lupus mechanism ( = 2)].

Improving Hearing Aid Self-Efficacy and Utility Through Revising a Hearing Aid User Guide: A Pilot Study.

Purpose: This pilot study aimed to investigate whether revising a hearing aid user guide (HAUG) is associated with improved hearing aid self-efficacy and utility performance.

Method: In Part 1, an HAUG was evaluated using the Suitability Assessment of Material (SAM) and readability formulas (Flesch Reading Ease [Flesch, 1943], Flesch-Kincaid Readability Formula [Kincaid, Fishburne, Rogers, & Chissom, 1957], and Simple Measure of Gobbledygook [McLaughlin, 1969]). The HAUG was revised using results from the SAM and best practice guidelines.

Perceptions of family-centred services in a paediatric rehabilitation programme: strengths and complexities from multiple stakeholders.

Background: Family-centred services (FCS) are best practice in paediatric rehabilitation and describe philosophies and approaches to medical care that emphasize the partnership and involvement of parents. While evidence supports FCS, there are complexities to its successful implementation. This mixed-methods study aimed to measure the extent to which parents and the healthcare provider (HCP) perceive service provision as being family centred, and to describe barriers and facilitators to the delivery of FCS.

Transferring patient care: patterns of synchronous bidisciplinary communication between physicians and nurses during handoffs in a critical care unit.

Purpose: The transfer of patient care from one health care worker to another involves communication in high-pressure contexts that are often vulnerable to error. This research project captured current practices for handoffs during the critical care stage of surgical recovery in a hospital setting. The objective was to characterize information flow during transfer and identify patterns of communication between nurses and physicians.

Perception of objects in the scene around us is effortless and intuitive, yet entails profound computational challenges. Progress has been made in understanding some mechanisms by which the brain encodes the boundaries and surfaces of visual objects. However, in the auditory domain, these mechanisms are poorly understood.

A large mutational study in pachyonychia congenita.

Pachyonychia congenita (PC) is a rare autosomal dominant skin disorder characterized predominantly by nail dystrophy and painful palmoplantar keratoderma. Additional clinical features include oral leukokeratosis, follicular keratosis, and cysts (steatocysts and pilosebaceous cysts). PC is due to heterozygous mutations in one of four keratin genes, namely, KRT6A, KRT6B, KRT16, or KRT17.

Breastfeeding outcomes for women with insulin dependent diabetes.

The incidence of breastfeeding among women with insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) has received little attention. During a 17-month period, 19 pregnant women with IDDM attending the prenatal clinic of the Royal Women's Hospital (Brisbane) were recruited into a prospective study to compare their breastfeeding outcomes with a control group of 18 women who were not diabetic (non-IDDM). The incidence of breastfeeding was monitored.

Venepuncture for calcium assays: should we still avoid the tourniquet?

Blood was collected by venepuncture from nine healthy subjects over a ten minute period before applying a standard tourniquet, and over a ten minute period afterwards. Plasma ionised calcium was unaltered by the tourniquet, whereas total calcium, total protein and albumin in serum increased modestly. However, there was no effect on total calcium adjusted for albumin.
