When experiencing sexual health uncertainties, emerging adults often rely on friends for support; however, the support provided is not always helpful. This study situates support in response to uncertainty within appraisal and attribution theories to explain nurturant, informational, and tangible support provision. Study 1 coded 441 participants' responses to open-ended questions about a recent conversation about a friend's sexual health uncertainty.

The Björk-Shiley mechanical valve was the first tilting-disc valve used to replace aortic and mitral valves. We present a case of a double aortic and mitral valve replacement with both valves functioning properly over 48 years after the original implantation. Minimal negative changes are evident in either valve despite the progression of cardiac abnormalities, including the development of a dilated cardiomyopathy associated with chronic systolic and diastolic heart failure and the implantation of an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD).

Article Synopsis
  • The study assessed the ability of US HIV care facilities to implement strategies for Ending the HIV Epidemic using survey data from 514 facilities in 2021.
  • Findings showed that while many facilities offered critical services like pre- and post-exposure prophylaxis, there were significant gaps in support such as on-site substance use treatment and connection to food and housing resources.
  • Overall, while strengths exist in providing some key services, improvements are needed in staff training and support systems for patients to enhance care effectiveness.

A 48-year-old man with hypertension and hypercholesterolemia was referred with an abnormal ECG showing signs of myocardial ischemia and structural change consistent with ventricular hypertrophy. Upon further workup with MRI, echocardiogram, and exercise stress test with perfusion images, it was determined that the man had no cardiac abnormalities. Ten years later, the patient developed structural changes consistent with the abnormal ECG.

Purpose: To determine the effect of time to surgery on outcomes following open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of both-bone forearm fractures (BBFFs).

Methods: Ninety-nine patients who underwent ORIF of BBFFs in a single academic medical center over a 16-year time period were retrospectively reviewed. Demographic and clinical data including age, sex, current smoking status, time from injury to surgery (t), presence of open injury, polytrauma status, and complications were obtained.

Vaccines represent one of the greatest health efforts to help combat diseases, yet they often evoke emotional responses among individuals. These emotional responses can influence an individual's desire to seek information about vaccines. The purpose of this research was to examine these relationships further using the Planned Risk Information Seeking Model (PRISM) and explore the role of emotions, specifically fear and hope, on vaccine-related information seeking intentions.

Objective: To evaluate whether reported prevalence of unemployment, subsistence needs, and symptoms of depression and anxiety among adults with diagnosed HIV during the COVID-19 pandemic were higher than expected.

Design: The Medical Monitoring Project (MMP) is a complex sample survey of adults with diagnosed HIV in the United States.

Methods: We analyzed 2015-2019 MMP data using linear regression models to calculate expected prevalence, along with corresponding prediction intervals (PI), for unemployment, subsistence needs, depression, and anxiety for June-November 2020.

Unlabelled: Social media can influence how students and residents learn about and select graduate medical education programs. COVID-19-related travel restrictions forced residencies to adapt their recruitment strategies. The objective of our investigation was to characterize the prevalence of social media use by orthopaedic surgery residency programs and to examine any change over time before the COVID-19 pandemic and leading up to the 2020 to 2021 virtual interview season.

Background: ALK-rearrangement is observed in < 5% non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cases and prior to the advent of oral tyrosine kinase inhibitors, the natural history of oncogenic NSCLC was typically poor. Literature relating to regression of treatment-naïve NSCLC is limited, and regression without treatment has not been noted in the ALK-rearranged sub-population.

Case Presentation: A 76 year old 'never smoker' female with an ALK-rearranged left upper lobe T2 N0 NSCLC experienced a stroke following elective DC cardioversion for new atrial fibrillation.

Background: Pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) is a well-established therapeutic management programme for patients with chronic lung disease. Despite good clinical evidence, patient engagement can be poor.

Aim: The aim of the study was to determine the number of patients who are referred to PR at a District General Hospital, explore barriers and facilitators to attending and completing and identify strategies for improvement.

Pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) may not suit all individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and may not result in increased physical activity. Higher levels of physical activity are associated with reduced mortality and morbidity. The aim of this study was to assess the feasibility of conducting a trial to investigate the effectiveness of a clinician-facilitated physical activity intervention (PAI) versus PR in improving physical activity in patients with COPD referred to PR.

Problem: Health-risk behaviors contribute to the leading causes of morbidity and mortality among youth and adults in the United States. In addition, significant health disparities exist among demographic subgroups of youth defined by sex, race/ethnicity, and grade in school and between sexual minority and nonsexual minority youth. Population-based data on the most important health-related behaviors at the national, state, and local levels can be used to help monitor the effectiveness of public health interventions designed to protect and promote the health of youth at the national, state, and local levels.

Endobronchial ultrasound has become first line in the investigation of mediastinal lesions suspicious for malignancy in keeping with National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines; however, needle size and type required to maximise diagnostic sensitivity remains unclear. Previous meta-analyses have compared the use of ProCore with standard fine needle aspiration in the assessment of pancreatic masses with differences noted only in the number of passes required. We aim to assess whether a ProCore needle improves diagnostic sensitivity in EBUS-TBNA.

Objectives: To examine trends in the percentage of US secondary schools that implemented practices related to the support of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) students.

Methods: This analysis used data from 4 cycles (2008-2014) of School Health Profiles, a surveillance system that provides results representative of secondary schools in each state. Each school completed 2 self-administered questionnaires (principal and teacher) per cycle.
