Article Synopsis
  • Evidence shows that human-induced waste significantly impacts deep-ocean ecosystems, with debris being found even in remote areas during initial explorations.
  • A study in the tropical Atlantic and Caribbean Sea recorded various types of marine debris, including plastic, metal, and glass, at depths ranging from 250 to over 6000 meters, observed using submersibles.
  • The discovery of 139 debris items—such as a ladder, clothing, and single-use packaging—highlights the severity of pollution in these deep waters and underscores the importance of understanding its effects on ocean sustainability.

The NLRP3 inflammasome is a key target for drug discovery due to its implication in a range of inflammation-related diseases. In this work, we identify new inhibitors of the NLRP3 inflammasome via a hierarchical virtual screening strategy using molecular similarity, docking and MD simulation. The most potent inhibitors identified from a subsequent biological assay (IC of 1 - 4 μM) feature a sulfonamide group, a motif known to favour NLRP3 inhibition, in conjunction with an indole, benzofuran or tricyclic 6,7-dihydro-5H-indeno[5,6-b]furan ring, yielding novel scaffolds.

Background: Resilience mechanisms at the individual, family, and environmental levels may improve health outcomes despite potentially harmful stress exposure partly through the practice of positive health behaviors.

Methods: We performed a secondary analysis of 2016-2021 National Survey of Children's Health data to assess the relationships between three resilience domains - child, family, neighborhood - and six health behaviors using multiple regression models adjusted for the other resilience domain(s) and potential confounders.

Results: Analysis revealed significant associations between each resilience domain and multiple health behaviors in a total weighted analytic sample of 70,156,540 children.

Intracerebral haemorrhage is a debilitating stroke sub-type with high morbidity and mortality rates. For survivors, rehabilitation is a long process, and with no available therapeutics to limit the immediate pathophysiology of the haemorrhage, recovery is dependent on individual neuroplasticity. We have previously shown that zebrafish larvae can be used to model spontaneous brain haemorrhage.

Issue Addressed: Food environments surrounding schools have a strong influence on the adolescent's food choices. Moreover, the prevalence of diet-related chronic diseases is higher in regional than metropolitan areas in Australia. Understanding school food environments in these different settings is crucial for informing future strategies to improve adolescent health.

Chlamydia trachomatis, a leading cause of bacterial sexually transmitted infections, creates a specialized intracellular replicative niche by translocation and insertion of a diverse array of effectors (Incs [inclusion membrane proteins]) into the inclusion membrane. Here, we characterize IncE, a multifunctional Inc that encodes two non-overlapping short linear motifs (SLiMs) within its short cytosolic C terminus. The proximal SLiM, by mimicking just a small portion of an R-N-ethylmaleimide-sensitive factor adaptor protein receptor (SNARE) motif, binds and recruits syntaxin (STX)7- and STX12-containing vesicles to the inclusion.

Nonreceptor tyrosine phosphatases (NTPs) play an important role in regulating protein phosphorylation and have been proposed as attractive therapeutic targets for cancer and metabolic diseases. We have previously identified that 3-Hydroxy-1,2,3-benzotriazin-4(3H)-one (HODHBt) enhanced STAT activation upon cytokine stimulation, leading to increased reactivation of latent HIV and effector functions of NK and CD8 T cells. Here, we demonstrate that HODHBt interacted with and inhibited the NTPs PTPN1 and PTPN2 through a mixed inhibition mechanism.

Background: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in remote Australia have initiated bold policies for health-enabling stores. Benchmarking, a data-driven and facilitated 'audit and feedback' with action planning process, provides a potential strategy to strengthen and scale health-enabling best-practice adoption by remote community store directors/owners. We aim to co-design a benchmarking model with five partner organisations and test its effectiveness with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community stores in remote Australia.

Article Synopsis
  • Chinese American immigrants are often underrepresented in health research, particularly due to difficulties in recruitment.
  • This study focused on recruiting and retaining foreign-born Chinese women with a history of gestational diabetes during the COVID-19 pandemic, utilizing tailored strategies like culturally relevant flyers and social media.
  • The study achieved a high retention rate of 96.3%, with successful participant adherence to device wearing and survey completion, demonstrating effective recruitment strategies.

Engaging young people in research is a promising approach to tackling issues like chronic disease prevention. Our involvement as youth advisors provided valuable experiences, including being at the forefront of change and learning to work within a research team. Furthermore, our experience provides greater insight and learnings for future youth engagement in research.

Background: National child obesity rates continue to climb. While neighborhood factors are known to influence childhood weight, more work is needed to further our understanding of these relationships and inform intervention and policy approaches reflective of complex real-world contexts.

Methods: To evaluate the associations between neighborhood components and childhood overweight/obesity, we analyzed sequential, cross-sectional data from the National Survey of Children's Health collected annually between 2016 and 2021.

is the leading cause of bacterial sexually transmitted infections in the USA and of preventable blindness worldwide. This obligate intracellular pathogen replicates within a membrane-bound inclusion, but how it acquires nutrients from the host while avoiding detection by the innate immune system is incompletely understood. accomplishes this in part through the translocation of a unique set of effectors into the inclusion membrane, the lusion membrane proteins (Incs).

Introduction: Prehospital stroke endovascular therapy bypass transports patients with suspected large vessel occlusion directly to an endovascular therapy capable center. Our objective was to determine if an endovascular therapy bypass protocol improved access to stroke treatments. Secondary objectives were to determine safety, effectiveness, and rate of subsequent interfacility transfers.

Purpose: Although a contemporary randomized clinical trial has led to the use of whole-pelvic radiation therapy (WPRT), long-term data evaluating a potential reduction in mortality are lacking and are addressed in the current study.

Materials And Methods: From 2005 to 2015, 350 men with localized, unfavorable-risk prostate cancer (PC) were randomly assigned to receive androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) and RT plus docetaxel versus ADT and RT. Treatment of the pelvic lymph nodes was at the discretion of the treating physician.

Reporting key dietary indicators from sales data can help us guide store decision makers in developing effective store policy to support healthier customer purchases. We aimed to develop a web-based reporting tool of key dietary indicators from sales data to support health-promoting policy and practice in stores in geographically remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Tool development included identifying key dietary indicators (informed by sales data from 31 stores), community consultation (19 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander store directors and two store managers) and a web-build.

Fusobacterium nucleatum (Fn), a bacterium present in the human oral cavity and rarely found in the lower gastrointestinal tract of healthy individuals, is enriched in human colorectal cancer (CRC) tumours. High intratumoural Fn loads are associated with recurrence, metastases and poorer patient prognosis. Here, to delineate Fn genetic factors facilitating tumour colonization, we generated closed genomes for 135 Fn strains; 80 oral strains from individuals without cancer and 55 unique cancer strains cultured from tumours from 51 patients with CRC.

Background: Environmental factors can impact the ability of food retail businesses to implement best practice health-enabling food retail.

Methods: We co-designed a short-item survey on factors influencing food retail health-enabling practice in a remote Australian setting. Publicly available submissions to an Australian Parliamentary Inquiry into food pricing and food security in remote Indigenous communities were coded using an existing remote community food systems assessment tool and thematically analysed.
