Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) infects over 95% of the world's population and is the most common cause of infectious mononucleosis (IM). Epidemiologic studies have linked EBV with certain cancers or autoimmune conditions, including multiple sclerosis (MS). Recent studies suggest that molecular mimicry between EBV proteins, particularly EBV nuclear antigen 1 (EBNA-1), and self-proteins is a plausible mechanism through which EBV infection may contribute to the development of autoimmune disorders.

Article Synopsis
  • Delirium is a common complication for older adults after hip fracture surgery, with a study analyzing patient data from 2015-2020 revealing inconsistent links between the type of anaesthesia used and the occurrence of delirium.
  • Among the 35,252 patients studied, those who received general anaesthesia (40.6%) showed higher rates of delirium compared to those who received spinal or regional anaesthesia (35.7%).
  • Adjustments for known confounders indicated a weak association between general anaesthesia and delirium, but an analysis addressing unmeasured factors found no significant causal link, suggesting more research is needed in this area.

Introduction: Sickle cell disease is ameliorated and perhaps can be 'cured' if enough fetal hemoglobin is present in most erythrocytes. Hydroxyurea, which increases fetal hemoglobin levels, is widely available and effective, especially in children. Nevertheless, only cell-based gene therapy can achieve a 'curative' fetal hemoglobin threshold.

Although the precise molecular mechanisms responsible for neuronal death and motor dysfunction in late-onset Parkinson's disease (PD) are unknown, evidence suggests that mitochondrial dysfunction and neuroinflammation occur early, leading to a collective increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and oxidative stress. However, the lack of methods for tracking oxidative stress in the living brain has precluded its use as a potential biomarker. The goal of the current study is to address this need through the evaluation of the first superoxide (O)-sensitive radioactive tracer, [F]ROStrace, in a model of late-onset PD.

Altering posture relative to the direction of gravity, or exposure to microgravity has been shown to affect many aspects of perception, including size perception. Our aims in this study were to investigate whether changes in posture and long-term exposure to microgravity bias the visual perception of object height and to test whether any such biases are accompanied by changes in precision. We also explored the possibility of sex/gender differences.

  • A weakly supervised AI model called Triagnexia Colorectal was created to detect abnormal colorectal histology, like dysplasia and cancer, and prioritize biopsies based on clinical importance.
  • The model was trained on nearly 25,000 digitized images and evaluated by multiple pathologists, offering a user-friendly interface to enhance decision-making in digital pathology.
  • Validation results show high accuracy for the AI model, with impressive specificity and sensitivity scores, which pathologists found beneficial for detecting and prioritizing abnormal colorectal cases.

Although estimating travel distance is essential to our ability to move through the world, our distance estimates can be inaccurate. These odometric errors occur because people tend to perceive that they have moved further than they had. Many of the studies investigating the perception of travel distance have primarily used forward translational movements, and postulate that perceived travel distance results from integration over distance and is independent of travel speed.

The overarching purpose of carbon accounting is to reduce carbon emissions to meet net-zero targets and minimize the impact of climate change. However, the plethora of methods and approaches used means that products and systems sometimes cannot easily be compared. The mix of regional and life cycle-based systems can mean that we lack global oversight of our emissions and impact.

Background: Early cardiopulmonary resuscitation and defibrillation is key to increasing survival following an out-of-hospital-cardiac-arrest (OHCA). However, automated external defibrillators (AEDs) are used in a very small percentage of cases. Despite large numbers of AEDs in the community, the absence of a unified system for registering their locations across the UK's ambulance services may have resulted in missed opportunities to save lives.

While the impact of spirituality as it relates to quality of life post-liver transplant (LT) has been studied, there are limited data showing how religious affiliation impacts objective measures such as survival. The aim of the study is to investigate whether LT recipients who identified as having a religious affiliation had better clinical outcomes when compared to LT recipients who did not. Religious affiliation is obtained as part of general demographic information for patients within our institution (options of "choose not to disclose" and "no religious affiliation" are available).

Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection inhibits mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) and elevates mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS, mROS) which activates hypoxia-inducible factor-1alpha (HIF-1α), shifting metabolism toward glycolysis to drive viral biogenesis but also causing the release of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and activation of innate immunity. To determine whether mitochondrially targeted antioxidants could mitigate these viral effects, we challenged mice expressing human angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) with SARS-CoV-2 and intervened using transgenic and pharmacological mitochondrially targeted catalytic antioxidants. Transgenic expression of mitochondrially targeted catalase (mCAT) or systemic treatment with EUK8 decreased weight loss, clinical severity, and circulating levels of mtDNA; as well as reduced lung levels of HIF-1α, viral proteins, and inflammatory cytokines.

Neurological and cardiac injuries are significant contributors to morbidity and mortality following pediatric in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA). Preservation of mitochondrial function may be critical for reducing these injuries. Dimethyl fumarate (DMF) has shown potential to enhance mitochondrial content and reduce oxidative damage.

The synucleinopathies are a diverse group of neurodegenerative disorders characterized by the accumulation of aggregated alpha-synuclein (aSyn) in vulnerable populations of brain cells. Oxidative stress is both a cause and a consequence of aSyn aggregation in the synucleinopathies; however, noninvasive methods for detecting oxidative stress in living animals have proven elusive. In this study, we used the reactive oxygen species (ROS)-sensitive positron emission tomography (PET) radiotracer [F]ROStrace to detect increases in oxidative stress in the widely-used A53T mouse model of synucleinopathy.

Hypothermia is a critical consequence of extreme cold exposure that increases the risk of cold-related injury and death in humans. While the initiation of cytoprotective mechanisms including the process of autophagy and the heat shock response (HSR) is crucial to cellular survival during periods of stress, age-related decrements in these systems may underlie cold-induced cellular vulnerability in older adults. Moreover, whether potential sex-related differences in autophagic regulation influence the human cold stress response remain unknown.
